Wireless Speaker Options

There are different types of wireless speakers designed for different needs. Stereo speakers can deliver both left and right stereo channels in a single speaker. There are wireless speakers designed for outdoor and nautical use. These speaker casings are designed to fight the outdoor elements and boast to be waterproof. Our computers and lap tops are now becoming our entertainment systems in our homes. There are wireless speakers designed for computers so now we can improve the audio quality coming from our computers and lap tops. And our I Pods and MP3 players can support a wireless speaker system which opens up another way to enjoy our down loaded music. Today we can set up our audio devices wherever we want and have the freedom to move our speakers without the use of cables. The receiver/speaker unit contains an amplifier to boost the audio signal to the loud speaker. This is usually powered by batteries or an A/C outlet. The batteries usually last 3 to 4 hours and are rechargeable. Hopefully improvements in power supply are in the works as technology advances.

The signal frequency generated by the transmitter is similar to that of a cordless phone at 900MHz. This signal can go through walls, ceilings and floors. Most manufacturers claim a range of 150 to 300 feet. Some wireless speakers offer a tuning device in order to overcome interference from similar 900MHz devices like cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwaves. A wireless speaker system with a different MHz rating may help with reducing interferences.

Like everything that is relatively new, wireless speakers have received its share of criticism from audio conic ours. Mostly because of potential RF interference from other signal sources and relatively low sound quality. Personally, I may give up a bit of sound quality in exchange to have the freedom to place my speakers around my home or outside verses how much speaker wire I have to purchase and how many holes I have to drill. Within the last few years wireless speaker technology has much improved in sound quality, range and affordability. Every major manufacturer now offers several different model choices.

In todays world our computers, lap tops and Ipods have developed into our entertainment systems. We now download movies and music off the internet so why not improve the sound quality of these devices? Wireless speakers are an excellent option. I remember back to 1972 when I bought my first stereo system and thinking “where can I set up my stereo as not to expose those ugly speaker wires?” Usually the solution was running them behind the couch or under the rug. Now with today’s technology those wires can be tossed out and our speakers are free to move anywhere around the room, infact all over the house! Even outside! All because of wireless technology. In summary, when choosing a wireless speaker system, first consider the device your using, this will determine what direction to follow. Then what kind of range are you expecting from your speakers? How much interference is involved in the environment? What kind of sound quality are you expecting from your sound system? And finally, What is your price range?
