How You Can Defeat Procrastination
Is it difficult for you to take action when you know it\’s going to be good for you? But somehow there\’s a little bird on your shoulder making all kinds of excuses for you not to do the task. I know I struggle with this little bird every single day. I know I need to write an article, work out, get onto my social networks, call my friends, and make time for my family. These are all really great fun things for me, why do I struggle with that stupid little bird causing me to procrastinate?
I learned today that the first thing to do to overcome procrastination is to come clean with you. Let that little bird know what it\’s doing to you. Tell the little bird that it\’s been in control of your actions for way to long. Decide today that you know you\’ve been procrastinating and stop thinking about the excuses your making.
Next, examine the excuses you\’re making to get yourself out of working. Really excuses are just a way for us to put blame somewhere else. If we can manage to make an excuse that removes us as the reason for not completing what we need to do, then it makes it okay, right? I mean, it\’s not my fault that I can\’t get these things done. I have all kinds of other reasons besides me that I have no control of. So of course I just can\’t complete these tasks that are so much bigger than me.
Now that we know where the blame really is, focus on what the benefits will be if you just get the tasks done. Visualize the outcome as if you\’ve already completed it. Wouldn\’t it be nice to stop that little bird from saying, \”When are you going to work out? You know how good you feel about yourself afterwards.\” Why do I have one bird saying do it and in the meantime the other bird is busy making excuses not to do it? Great, now I have two birds! I really want to shut up both birds. Just get the task done and voila, those birds stop shouting at you and the thoughts stop floating around in your head all day. Just complete the task and both little birds are finally silent. And you feel good because what you visualized as a benefit of completing the task is here, it\’s real!
There is only one person in your life that can improve you. Want to take a guess who that might be? It\’s you! Who is in control of those two little birds? It\’s you! I know it\’s hard to break old habits. My old habit is exchanging time for money. Now that I\’ve made the choice to be an entrepreneur, I have tons of old habits to break. It is risky take control of your potential and stop relying on an employer. But you are the only one that can be a milestone in your own personal success. It\’s worth the risk, you and I both deserve to grow and realize our full potential.
Do you believe you have treasure within you? You do! You have unique qualities that only you bring to the world. They are there to put fire in your soul. Think about all the songs never sang, dances never danced, books never written, why? That noisy little bird making excuses so we won\’t risk growth and fulfillment of our purpose and potential.
Ask yourself…Who am I? Why am I here? How much potential do I have? How can I maximize my abilities?
Today, I pledge to stop letting those noisy little birds squash my potential. I promise to take control of the tasks at hand and just get it done! Can you make this promise to yourself too?
Don\’t forget you have the intelligence, creativity and ability to fully realize your potential. Don\’t let yourself talk you out of that.
