There are many different types of art and artists, but none like a sculpture artist. Anyone can look around and see all different types of sculptures in many different forms.

Some are very popular and known worldwide, while others are known throughout a community. So, what makes someone a sculpture artist?

Well, that would be easy to define if one knows what a sculpture is. It is a three-dimensional piece of work. It is created by shaping, cutting, welding, chiseling, firing, or molding a medium.

A sculpture artist uses a medium to create their work. A medium can be clay, metal, polymer, plastic, paper, music, light, and even water.

These are used either singularly, but many times, there is more than one medium used to complete the work. It really can be any material that one can sculpt into something. Then they take it and shape it into whatever their minds can imagine.

There are some sculpture artists that get commissioned for their work. It might be a new government building, a corporate office, business, or park that wants a piece of art in their lobby or as a focal point in a public garden.

When they are commissioned to do such large pieces of work, many start with what is called a maquettes. This is a small scale version of what the completed work will look like.

People that would be considered a sculpture artist have been around since the beginning of civilization, but they just weren\’t called that. They made pieces that reflected their lives, culture, period of time, religion, beliefs, morality, and politics. These pieces have often helped discover and document different civilizations throughout the world.

This type of work is considered to be the most popular fine art form. Many people attribute that to the making and creating of these pieces. They are unlike any other art form.

Many are of historical figures, figures of mythology, or children\’s stories, but most are a reflection of the creators’ feelings or mood. Why is that? It is because sculpting allows the creator to be more intimately involved with each piece than with any other type of work.

Imagine forming a face out of clay. The amount of detail that is involved, more so than any other creative outlet, is tremendous.

This entails, quite literally, forming the eyes, nose, mouth, and jaw line with one’s own hands. How much more intimate can creativity get? This allows for even a more in depth sense of emotion and attachment to each piece a sculpture artist creates.

This type of work can entail some heavy lifting. There are creators that use large pieces of steel, welding them together to make mountainous masterpieces. Others create on a much smaller scale but with the same intensity and dedication.

There are a lucky few that can call this their livelihood. Most others consider it more than just a hobby, and more like a passion.

They consider it to be a way and means to express feelings or emotions that otherwise, they would have no outlet to do so. However, the beginning for this type of creativity starts in childhood when so much of how things are learned is hands on.

Another avenue for such artists is through formal education and getting a degree in their field whereas, in turn, they can become an educator to others that have a similar passion as well as being able to do what they love every day, which is to create.
