Your college freshmen year is off to a great start. You\’ve entered an exciting new phase of your life, with unprecedented freedom away from your parents, exciting friendships, and new challenges.

In the last couple of months, the anticipation of new living arrangements and roommates has resolved into budding friendships. The campus that once seemed enormous is becoming more and more familiar.

Along with your new taste of freedom, you’ve challenged the boundaries of over-indulgence, from over drinking, over partying, and definitely over eating. Especially if you are living in the dormitory, it can be tough to be presented with an all-you-can-eat buffet for three meals a day.

All this freedom and excess has been hard on your health, and has resulted in some weight gain. The jeans are getting a bit too snug for comfort, and that muffin top has never been more unappealing.

The dreaded “Freshmen 15” has become a reality. It happens to everyone. So what can you do about it? Here are some ideas to help you lose the “freshmen 15.”

1. Walk or bike to class – On many college campuses, parking is often limited and can be expensive by the time you consider parking, gas, and the occasional parking ticket. It\’s easier, and definitely more beneficial for your health if you walk or bike to class.

2. Minimize the carb intake – If you are living in the dorms, there\’s probably an abundance of carbohydrate heavy meals available. Be careful to limit the enormous servings of pasta dished out from the enormous serving troughs. Choose to fill your plate with lean proteins, vegetables and fruits.

3. Drink a lot of water – Keep a water bottle with you at all times to make sure you stay hydrated. Proper hydration allows your body to process the nutrients and keep hunger at bay.

4. Prepare your own snacks – If possible, prepare healthy snacks to take with you during the day. Even if you’re living in the dorms, reach for the banana or apple instead of anything packaged (even if they come in 100 calorie servings). Healthy snacks will keep you from becoming overly hungry by meal time and help you making better choices.

5 Cleanse regularly – Even if you eat unhealthily most of the time, you can get back on the healthy track and feel better if you occasionally complete an internal cleanse. Cleanses help your body rid toxins and waste build-up, and quickly lose unwanted weight.

6. Don\’t eat after 8:00 pm – Late nights are part of the college experience, but please cut out the pizza and chips!

8. Get enough sleep – This may seem nearly impossible to accomplish, but getting a minimum of 7 hours of sleep each night can really help you keep the weight off. Chronic sleep deprivation can cause weight gain by affecting the way our bodies process carbohydrates, and affect our appetite.
