Different Types Of Water Filtration Systems Explained
Because each water purification technology eliminates specific types of contaminants, it is important to test your water for the presence of contaminants and their types so that you choose the best water filtration system. Below is a list of water filtration systems and an explanation of each system.
Ion Exchange: This process of ion exchange involves percolating water that passes through spherical (bead like) resin materials which are called ion-exchange resins. In this process, the ions that are in the water are exchanged for other ions that are fixed to the beads. Softening and Deionization are the two most common ion-exchange processes. Softening is used to treat water harness before reverse osmosis (RO). The beads exchange 2 sodium ions for each magnesium or calcium ion removed from the softened water. Deionization (DI) beads exchange either hydrogen ions for cations or hydroxyl ions for anions. The hydrogen ion from the cation exchanger merges with the hydroxyl ion of the anion exchanger to produce clean water. DI successfully removes ions, but does not remove most microorganisms and organics.
Carbon Adsorption: As the most commonly used method in home water filter treatment, Carbon Adsorption improves water by removing bad tastes and aromas, while removing many chemicals, including chlorine. It will not remove hardness, dissolved solids, or heavy metals. There are only several carbon filter systems that have been certified for the removal of cysts, lead, coliform, and asbestos. There are two types of carbon filter systems, – solid block carbon and granular activated carbon. An activated carbon filter can remove certain microorganisms and certain organic chemicals, such as PCBs, THMs (chlorine by-product), pesticides, and trichloroethylene (TCE). Certain granular carbons successfully remove chloramines. Carbon is normally used with other water treatment processes.
Microporous Filtration: There are three types of microporous filtration – Surface, Screen, and Depth. Depth filters are matted fibers that retain particles by entrapment or random adsorption. Screen filters act as a sieve that retains large particles. Surface filters are made from many layers of media. They contain pores on the surface of the filter that can capture larger particles. Depth filters are usually used as pre-filters.
Reverse Osmosis: RO removes 90% to 99% of all water contaminants. The pore structure of RO membranes is very tight. They can remove almost all organics, particles, and bacteria. Reverse osmosis is used by most water bottling plants. Osmotic pressure moves water through the membrane where the water dilutes the more concentrated solution resulting in equilibrium. The flow rates are slow in reverse osmosis. Reverse osmosis can remove such contaminants as lead, turbidity, asbestos, total dissolved solids (TDS), radium, dissolved organics, chlorinated pesticides, and most VOCs. This method and activated carbon filtration provide the most efficient treatment for a wide range of contaminants in the water.
Ultraviolet (UV) Radiation: Ultraviolet radiation has been used as a germicide and killing microorganisms by deactivation the DNA and proteins in the microbial cell.
The above list is a few of the top water filtration methods. It is important to get the system that eliminates the specific contaminants in your water so you should get your water tested before you choose your water filtration system.
