What Causes Hardening of the Arteries?
Cases of atherosclerosis are growing, that is why it should come as no surprise if you would take interest to know what causes hardening of the arteries. There are many factors that can be linked with the hardening of the arteries but all boil down to one point – the injured interior lining of the arterial walls. The injury to the interior lining of the arterial walls is the main reason why hardening of the arteries takes place. You see if only the interior lining of your arterial walls are healthy, blood and all the substances it carries will have no difficulty passing through the arterial walls to be distributed to the different organs of your body. But because of the injury, blood substances such as calcium, cholesterol, and fats, cannot anymore go inside the arterial walls, thus depositing themselves as plaque outside the arterial walls, eventually clogging them.
But you may ask, what damages the interior walls of the arteries? There isn\’t just one factor, actually, but several. Injury to the interior walls of the arteries can occur as a person grows old. Radiologic examinations of individuals already in their prime years often reveal an atherosclerotic heart, proving that as one grows old, his or her defenses weaken. In many individuals, hardening of the arteries come prematurely, also proving that there are other contributing factors that lead to its incidence. So what else can lead to the hardening of the arteries? Smoking, high levels of cholesterol, and high blood pressure have all been found to damage the interior walls of the arteries, thus if you want to delay the onset of atherosclerosis, you have to start changing your ways. Stop abusing yourself and start living the good life.
Essentially, this would require you to stop smoking at once and forever. If you are serious in preventing atherosclerosis or reversing it, you must kick the habit it. It may not be necessarily easy especially for chain smokers, but if you have the support of your family and your friends, you will eventually get used to the idea.
You should be more careful of your food choices, too. Foods that are deep fried in vegetable fat and contain lots of preservatives and chemical additives are to be avoided if not totally eliminated. When you do your groceries, load your shopping cart with vegetables and fruits, not canned foods, and when buying anything that is not fresh, make the habit of checking the labels to see how many calories or how much fat they contain. If the item happens to be high in trans fat or saturated fat, look for a healthier alternative. Consume more fruits with antioxidant properties and vegetables that are rich in fiber – these would help you greatly in preventing and reversing atherosclerosis.
Exercising regularly has always been stressed. Even if you do not have atherosclerosis, exercise should be part of your daily regimen. Simple exercises can improve your circulation and help with toxin removal.
Live a healthier lifestyle and stop what causes hardening of the arteries.
