Five Mental Health Tips
According to TriVita, the parent company of Nopalea Juice, there are five key steps you can take to be as mentally competent as possible, especially as you age.
The TriVita journal, VITAJOURNAL talks about how so many negative emotions and states of being can weigh people down physically, emotionally, and mentally and keep people from achieving their optimal mental capacity.
According to TriVita’s article, finding balance in life is the key to good mental health. It is all about balancing all the aspects of our lives including our work life, our family life, our relationship to food, the exercise we do, how we spend our leisure time and our spiritual lives and activities.
Here are five key ways to make sure you are doing your best to maintain mental wellness.
1. Have a social life. This means interaction with others. This social life is crucial to good mental health. The connections people make with others be it at work, with relatives, with neighbors or people you come into contact during your week. For instance, having connections with anyone you see on a regular basis can help you stay at your mental best.
2. Move your body. This means exercise and getting active. It doesn’t have to involve joining a gym or sweating and panting as you jog every day. Any type of movement that gets you going a bit helps. Find what you like and do that. Just move your body regularly. This helps stimulate endorphins to improve your mood and also helps with negative emotions, such as anxiety and depression.
3. Exercise your brain. Keep learning each day, especially as you get older. It is said that word exercises, such as crosswords and games like chess, keep people young mentally. In addition, some of these activities can also help your social life. Join a book club or chess club. Take a community education or college class.
4. Give to others. This might mean helping an elderly neighbor by grocery shopping for her. It could be volunteering at a soup kitchen. People who volunteer end up being happier. Sometimes when we worry too much about ourselves, we create a vicious cycle. You can break that cycle by helping someone else. It also puts your own life in perspective.
5. Keep a journal of what you are thankful for. You can keep this in your head or actually put it down on paper, but taking time every day to appreciate what you have – your health, the food on the table, the love of someone special, makes you mentally healthier and happier.
6. Ditch habits or behaviors that bring you down. If you overindulge in food, try to substitute a nice long walk for a binge session. If you drink too much, same deal. If you notice any type of behavior on your part leads to depression or regret, find a way to change that.
It is amazing how much of our mental well-being lies in our own hands. There are active steps we can all take to ensure we are being our best.
