How Are Insurance Premiums Calculated

We all know that you need a form of car insurance when you drive on public roads. What people seem to forget is how their premium, as they pay it, is calculated from. That may seem to be besides the point of car ownership but it is fact of life that how you drive on the road, will greatly determine how much you pay for the insurance for your car.

Not a lot of people think that how they drive and more importantly, their driving record is related to their insurance premiums. In fact, these two are almost interrelated. You may already forget those traffic tickets that you may have gotten in the past, but those are permanent records and will always be there. The insurance companies also make it a point to know your driving record, as well.

This is one of the basis for calculating the premiums that you pay on a monthly basis. If you have been a good driver, with no car insurance claims at all in the past, almost clean driving record, no traffic citations of any kind, etc., then you have leverage as to how much you can haggle for either the premiums that you pay, or the amount of coverage that you get, if you want higher coverage amount.

There even instances that the type of car that you drive will heavily influence the insurance premiums that will calculated from it. Generally, cars that are designed to be high performance will have a higher premiums associated with it. The reason for this is that higher performance cars have a higher maintenance schedule to go along with it, and this generally warrants a higher premiums for its use.

Not only that, because it is termed as a high performance vehicle, its inevitably going to be used in a high performance application, like what is termed as a ‘track day car’, or a car that can be used daily and also as a circuit car on the weekends, by the same driver.

There are also car insurance for first time drivers, or teenage drivers, or at least those people who are applying for their driver’s license for the first time. Generally, the premiums on these types of driver will be higher than those who have been driving for several years now. But there are the so called specialist insurance companies that may be able to help reduce your premiums if you are a first time driver. Looking for these specialist providers will help you greatly.

There are even Car Insurance for the so called modified cars. Called non-standard cars, these modified cars usually are improved upon by their owners but as a rule, they feature non standard parts installed. Although you may find it hard to insure a car that is modified, simply because of the fact that it is a non standard car, you can still find some car insurance companies that may be willing to insure your car, for a cost. It is more expensive to insure these types of cars because of the parts that are installed in them.
