TMC and Its Unique Concepts
Traditional Chinese Medicine or TMC is a broad range of medicinal practices, allocating a common theology about the human body and its healing power. This ancient Chinese concept includes the use of a range of herbal medicines, acupuncture, massage, exercise and a dietary therapy. This form of medicine is very popular in Eastern Asia and is commonly used even today, while the Western world regards this as an alternative medicine.
Modern day science and TMC do not go together. Traditional Chinese view of human body gives little importance on the anatomical structure of the body. It is wholly concerned with the identification of functions of the body which regulate digestion, breathing, aging, etc. Health is regarded as the harmonious interaction of the systems of the body and the outside world, while disease is said to be an imbalance or disharmony in the relations.
Chinese medicine regards disease to be a result of disharmony in the interactions of yin yang. A proper balance has to be maintained throughout the body for it to be healthy. Any disruption will lead to an automatic disturbance in the flow of body energy called qi, leading to illness. The qi travels through channels called meridians.
Treatment is based on which particular pattern of the body is disturbed. Diagnoses of the cause and the route affected is said to be the most complicated path of this medicinal practice. Practitioners examine the shape and size of the tongue, the strength of the pulse, the smell of the breath of the patient, the quality of breathing or the sound of the voice. Only after thorough examination diagnose is made and the patient starts receiving a specific treatment which is meant only for his body.
Chinese Medicine aims at making the body stronger and healthier as the disease is being treated. In does not believe in quick results and takes its own course of gradual treatment, removing all elements and restoring the proper flow of qi through the meridians.
There are around 100,000 Chinese medicinal recipes made from 13,000 herbal substances. Along with plant herbs some animal substances are also used for the medicinal formulae.
The formula is changed as there is improvement in the patient’s health.
Acupuncture is usually used together with the herbs. This aspect of TMC is related to the insertion of needles into the superficial structures of the body like skin, muscle and subcutaneous tissue. Theoretically there are several acupuncture points on the body and different points need to be treated with needles to restore the proper flow of qi. The meridians are supposed to be located under the skin and that’s the reason for the needles to be inserted in those specific places. These needles are administered close to the part where there is a problem or else they could be inserted at faraway places, as the qi flows in the entire body.
These two methods of treatment used together are giving relief to many all over the world and many practitioners have modernized the use of TMC to suit the Western world.
