Touring Jerusalem
Among the things that are a must see in Jerusalem are the Old City of Jerusalem. Here you can spend a whole day and find something to enjoy for your whole family. There are historic walking areas, historic sites and museums to explore.
Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial which is the world\’s leading national Holocaust memorial and museum. It is a 45 acre campus which consists of indoor museums, outdoor monuments, memorial, gardens, sculptures and world-class research and educational centers. Western (Wailing) Wall is one of Israel\’s biggest tourist attractions. Visitors come to the wall at all hours of the day and night. Here they take pictures while others pray.
For an amazing walk through history a must see is Hezekiah\’s Tunnels.
The Israel Museum consists of 50,000 square meters and has a six-acre sculpture garden in which you can see an impressive variety of collections from prehistoric archaeology to contemporty art. Tower of David Museum (The Citadel) is located in the restored ancient Citadel. This museum traces the long and chaotic history of Jerusalem. You can view audiovisual presentations, models, maps, holograms and videos.
Notre Dame de Sion Ecce Homo Convent – Ecce Homo is the first station of the cross on Via Dolorosa. It\’s managed by a sister\’s convent from Europe and this is where Pilate presented Jesus to the mob. Temple Mount is a historical site for both the First Temple built by King Solomon as well as the Second Temple built by the returning exiles from Persia. It was King Herod the Builder who later renovated this temple.
Tisch Family Zoological Gardens (Biblical Zoo) – Is a 62-acre zoo which consists of more than 140 species of animals and has two major themes: animals mentioned in the Bible and endangered species from around the world.
Mount of Olives is located east of Jerusalem and this holy spot is associated with many events in Jesus\’ life such as ascending to Heaven (Chapel of Ascension) and teaching his disciples the Lord\’s Prayer (Pater Noster). The City of David Visitors Center located in the City of David which is outside the walls of the Old City near the Dung Gate. This is where King David made his capital and built his palace. His son Solomon was the first to build a temple in Jerusalem.
Jewish Quarter (Cardo) has many shops and restaurants. Church of the Holy Sepulcher was built in the 4th Century over the site of a Roman Pagan temple. It is considered to be one of the holiest shrines to Christians, preserving the most important moments of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Dome of the Rock (al-Haram al-Sharif) as the Arabs call it was built by the Khalif Abdul Malik ibn Marwan. Within the Dome of the Rock is the footprint of Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) when he ascended to the Heavens.
Christian Quarter of Jerusalem\’s walled Old City holds the most important Christian Church, the Holy Sepulcher and a number of monasteries, archaeological sites and shrines along the Via Dolorosa.
