Deciding on a Name For Your House

Choosing the best name for your house can be a difficult task. In the past it would have been the owners’ of castles, manors and stately homes who would have given a name to their place of residence. However, in recent years this trend has spread and it has now become common among everyday folk. A house name would have normally been given depending on its location, although today there are a range of ideas to consider when reaching a suitable decision for the name of your house. The most important point to note is that you want to think very carefully about what name you will choose as this will be your main address, possibly for a number of years. As well as this, people will be able to view the name of the house on the displayed signs outside the property and therefore you need to choose wisely and go for a name that you won’t mind the rest of your community seeing.

In some cases, a house name is given when the building was previously used for another purpose. For example, a house might have the name ‘The Old Schoolhouse’ because it was formally a school or have the name ‘The Old Cottage’ for the same reason. This is a great name to go for if you want to remember the history of the house you now live in and what it was used for in the past.

However, you might not like this idea at all. You may feel that you want to come up with a selected name rather than calling your house by the very thing it was before. Well this is fine as there are plenty of other options as well.

Another idea for selecting the name of your house is to go for one that reflects the look of the house. If your house has large prominent chimneys then you could choose a name like ‘Two Chimneys’ or you could go for ‘Thatched Cottage’ if, yes you’ve guessed it, your cottage has a thatched roof. These names are quite good as they tell you what the house will look like for potential first time visitors before they even arrive.

Alternatively, you might decide to select a name that reminds you of an enjoyable holiday you went on not so long ago. People who give this sort of name to their house do so because it reminds them of good times in the past and the idea is that the house will also reflect the good times that they had when given the same name. An example of this would be through the name ‘Sorrento’. The only downside to this method is you might have had a lovely time in a certain place although the name would not be suitable for a house. If this is the case then you might want to think about some of the other options available.

Another idea for naming a house comes from the views and scenery that surround the property. If your house is near a river or lake then these words might find a place within the final name you go for. In the same way you might decide to name the house from the wildlife that can be found in the garden and surrounding area. This is a popular method for a lot of houses around the UK and some of the more common examples include ‘Fox Cottage’ and ‘The Jays’.

Whatever name you decide to go for, consider your options and maybe make a list of the top names you have thought of so far. This way you, your partner and your family can reach a final decision on the name of the house you wish to live in.
