Preparing for the Secret Santa

As the holidays draw near many families and coworkers alike prepare for their favorite games. One such game is Secret Santa. The point of this well-liked event is for everyone to write down their name on paper and put it in the box or hat. Finally, when every individual has done this the person holding the hat or shoe box of folded pieces of paper mixes them all up to hopefully insure no one draws their own names. The last step to this process is where all contributors line up to choose a piece of paper from the shoe box or hat. Without speaking the name he/she drew they casually put the paper in their pocket. Depending on how long the participants have agreed to play the game, either one day or the week preceding Christmas will determine the next chain of events.

Each secret Santa will purchase inexpensive gifts and wrap them addressed to their recipient. Once the gift/s are wrapped the next and funniest step is for the Santa to hide them. The hilarity of this holiday amusement is in the measures taken to keep their identity from being discovered to soon. For instance, some may take such extreme actions as to sneak around in the dark so as not to get ‘caught’ in the act. One might utilize a neighbor youth as a courier for the gift; if it is being delivered to their home as in the case of family or friends. Leaving the present on the recipients car, sending a singing gram, or even leaving the gift in the employee bathroom or break room prove to be successful ways to hide a gift. How many will be victorious at dodging detection is the test of skill in this well-liked game of mystery.

The mystery is revealed either at the family/friend dinner party or the company Christmas party. Each recipient attempts to guess whom their gifts were received from. The ambiguity of the individual is finally confirmed by the benefactor him/herself.

The second person now has the option to take a new gift or take away the gift that was previously opened by the first participant and so it goes until all gifts have been claimed.

The manner that each individual chooses to recognize the holiday is as individualized as each human. Whether it be in keeping with their religious or spiritual beliefs, or perhaps a continuation of long held family tradition the uniqueness of each is a celebration in itself.
