For tournament play, boards are placed 27 feet apart. And for amateur play, the boards may be placed 24 feet apart and even 20 feet apart for Junior play. However, when people just play for fun there isn’t a set number of feet that is required between the boards, especially if elderly people or young children are playing.

The games can be played as either singles or doubles format. In the singles format, players compete against another player. And they both pitch from the same board. For doubles play, the two member teams position themselves at opposite boards and alternate their throws.

A match consists of several innings. In each inning, four bags are thrown by each player. After each inning, scores are tallied based on whether the player kept his/her bag on the board and slid it through the hole.
