Domes are like arches as they can be constructed with a great deal of structural strength and can span large open spaces without any interior supports. They are fundamental element of architecture design and look similar to the empty upper half of a spherical object. There is a hard rubber ball bearing roller on the base ring of the structure to enable the covert to turn very easily. Most times, the dome are made manual, but can be converted to automatic by incorporating some electric motors. The motors will be rotating both the dome structure itself and the two shutters. Through automation, the observatory can be operated remotely.

Observatory domes use bolt and nut to tighten all the parts together. Assembly would require arrangement of spare parts, measuring and drilling of bolt holes and use of accepted hand and power tools. Those larger holes for the rollers and latches are usually cut and finished at the manufacturer’s plant. Typically, those domes for sale are assembled in place by two or three people even without the aid of any special equipment or cranes. Those bigger domes are usually installed at schools, colleges, museums and research centers. They are usually installed on concrete foundation or wooden decks. Some are also attached to a tower or rooftops and other custom structures.
