A Domain Name System (DNS) Supplies Peace of Mind to Website Owners
The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical distributed naming system for computers, printers, scanners, or any other peripheral resources connected to either a private network or to the internet. The DNS system is used in conjunction with the Internet Protocol (IP) address, to facilitate the navigation of a network or the internet.
Imagine if you will a very famous landmark, like Yankee Stadium in New York City. If you were to ask somebody how to get to it, they would tell you to take this street a few blocks and then turn left, until you got to such and such block, and then turn right. In this example Yankee Stadium is the name of the place you are trying to get to, and the address of the building is where it is located.
This is very similar to how the DNS and IP systems interact with each other. The IP is the address of a device on a network or the internet, and the DNS is the name of that object. An example of this using an URL connected to the internet would be the following, domain name example.com, which would later be translated into the IP address 198.105.232.4.
When an internet user types the web address of a site into a browser, they will get routed to a DNS server, which provides the IP address of the URL. After converting the websites name into the proper IP address, the user will be routed to the site via a content server.
