Readying your sofa for transport

It is important to talk to any potential transport providers about the details of the sofa. {What are its dimensions? Is it fragile}? {Is disassembly required or can it be moved as is}? Equally, it is important that you enquire whether the sofa transporter is best suited for your delivery. In some cases a man and van outfit might be possible, but if your sofa is quite large you will need to consider a company that uses larger commercial transport vehicles.

Before you can even have it transported, you will need to shift it out of the living room. Bribe a friend to help with the process, especially when lifting the sofa. If the sofa is particularly heavy you will obviously need a larger team!

You will need to measure the dimensions of your sofa if you plan on having it transported in one piece. Next, measure the width and height of the doors and hallways that the sofa will potentially be moved through. Hopefully the height or width of the sofa will be of a smaller size. If so, you can move your sofa! If this isn’t the case you will have to check whether the length of the sofa is smaller than the height of the door; if it is larger than you will have to disassemble the sofa

Some sofas are easily deconstructed, making the move to the transport vehicle a cinch. Simply, take apart the sofa by following the manufacturer’s guidelines and wrapping each section in blankets or soft material. In many cases you will not be able to take the sofa apart yourself and will therefore need to hire a carpenter or upholsterer for its disassembly.

Cover the sofa with a blanket or soft material, this cover should then be covered with another lining. This can be done by taping bin bags around the chair, making sure that there are no exposed fabrics. By lining the sofa with these layers it protects the fabric from any dirt that may be picked up whilst in the transport vehicle; also make sure to do this with any cushions that have been removed from the sofa.

Finally moving your sofa

When booking a sofa delivery service anywhere, you should try and gauge whether or not the driver will be working alone or be accompanied by a drivers mate. If they do work alone, it is often expected that you, the customer can assist at pickup and drop-off locations (especially if the goods are particularly large and/or heavy).

Make sure when placed in the van or lorry that the sofa is secured to stop it moving around during the journey and also make sure that nothing is placed on top of the sofa that could move about causing damage.
