Northern Virginia is a very exciting place to visit, and you will find it just a short jaunt across the river from the District of Columbia. As you find in DC, there are lots of very interesting attractions to keep you busy here for weeks. We have detailed some of them below. You should look into them the next time you swing into town.

The very famous and solemn Arlington National Cemetary is the first place you should visit. You will find an amazing 250,000 military veterans who have their final resting place here. We think you should take advantage of the great bus tour of this attraction. You also will learn about the well known Americans who rest here. You can check out the burial places of some famous people, that include presidents from Taft to Kennedy. First Lady Jackie Kennedy also is buried here. The fantastic Tomb of the Unknown Soldier must be visited during the change of the guard.

Next, we think that you should travel south by a few miles and go the Washington\’s home, Mt. Vernon. This is one of the most famous and lovely attractions in the state of Virgina. A short tour of the main rooms of the house is a great way to spend 40 minutes or so. Also you can look at the out buildings, his gardens where he grew many sorts of plants, and the brand new museum is worth a visit. You can still see a tree on the property near the house that date\’s to Washington\’s era.

Up further north, a really cool new attraction in Northern Virginia is the stunning Steven Udvar-Hazy Center. The name is long and ungainly, but what is great about it is that it is part of the famous Smithsonian Museum , and it is now the home of the first space shuttle Enterprise, as well as the awesome Lockheed SR-71 and many other old airplanes, famous spacecrafts and historical pieces. It also has a great IMAX theater and many interesting exhibits for the kids.

Across the river from Washington is the Iwo Jima Memorial, which is in honor of the United States Marines who have fought and died for the US since 1775. The sculpture is 32 feet high and was based upon the famous photograph of the flag being erected after one of the battles on Iwo Jima in World War 2.

Another interesting site that many do not know about is the US Air Force Memorial. This honors all the men and women in the US who have been in the Air Force. It has three steel spires that are 270 feet in height and are intended to represent the contrails of Air Force fighter jets, as they separate in a bomb burst maneuver during battle.

Also worth your visit is the Manassas National Battlefield Park. It is a very famous 5000 acre park that has been able to preserve the sites of the well know First and Second Battles of Manassas VA during the War Between the States. You can watch a 45 minute video at the visitor’s center so you can learn about the battle. Also you will discover a very interesting museum that is full of artifacts from the battle.
