The Power of Reality TV
What is the reason reality TV is so popular. Te be sure, many viewers in the television audience have had their fill of the entire premise of reality television. Nevertheless, the phenomenon keeps growing. To understand the reasons we need to look at the power of reality TV.
The fear of not making a difference, of having come and gone through this world without leaving a mark. That is something that everyone thinks about at one time or another. This fear is the reason for the popularity of celebrities. We see celebrities as people that made it, that have made their mark and who we will remember, even after they are gone.
Add to that a terrible world economy with people needing escape from reality. This is a powerful mix. This is not the first time in the last century that such a mix existed. During the great depression, people in England, Europe and the America\’s all flocked to cinema houses to get away from the pain of everyday life. The celebrities on the screen seemed immune from most daily troubles. We wished we were there with them.
We still have that attraction to movie stars, sports champions and entertainment stars. These types of celebrities have one thing in common. We knew little or nothing about them as they paid their dues and made it to the point where they are celebrities. Proof of this is the how defensive musicians or movie stars get with asked how it feels to be a star overnight. Far from being an overnight star they are well aware of how hard they worked, and the sacrifices they made to get where they are.
There in lies the big difference and big draw for the almost instant stars of reality TV. With reality television stars, we get to watch the process through which they become celebrities. We get to see the process by which every day people like you and me do rise to the top and become more of a celebrity that we have any right to be.
For advertisers reality television is obviously a gold mine. As these reality stars live their lives we watch everything they do, everything they touch and if possible, everything they buy. It is as if there is a secret in how they change their lives and perhaps we can have the same magic happen to us.
The draw for those auditioning to be on reality shows can often rise to a fever pitch. Crowd control at casting calls for reality television shows in Britain and the United States have become a major expense in the early stages of production.
One big difference in celebrity status gained from reality shows and other celebrities is that simply that we saw it all happen. There is no mystery to reality television stars. The fame and celebrity loses lustre without the miracle and magical question of how did it all happen. When the reality television show ends, the winner gets their few moments of fame and they are gone and forgotten. Yet audiences continue to clamour for more and more shows.
