How to Go About Eavestrough Repair
When a house or even commercial building is being cleaned, eavestroughs are often neglected. The result is often that eavestrough repair has to be done. Yet if they are cleaned just twice a year, ideally just before winter sets in and at the end of spring, the need for repair can be averted. Downspouts should also be inspected, cleaned and repaired at the same time.
Well maintained eavestrough can ward off problems that may cause floods in the basement, a damaged roof, ice jams and loosened mortar joints. The common sight of peeling paint is also often caused by an eavestrough system that is not maintained. Sometimes, the damage can become so extensive that the whole structure has to be taken down and rebuilt.
These troughs are placed to capture rain and snow running off the roof which it carries to the downspouts. The spouts then carry this from the house and direct it to a drain or a storm drain, a soak away that is placed in a garden. It can also be channeled into a natural lawn grading. The catch that is used will depend on the stipulations of the municipal laws of a specific region. If water is seen pooling at the foundation or there is dampness seeping into the basement this is an indication that the eavestrough system is faulty. Paint that starts to streak and chip or if ridges form in the ground below the eaves are also indicators of a defective system.
When this is spotted, it is necessary to immediately get to cleaning up the eavestrough. Leaves and other debris should first be removed. A whisk broom should be used inside the trough to clean it out inside and then a garden hose can be used to get to smaller bits.
The downspouts can also be cleaned by putting the garden hose in it and then turning it on. This should be done at full blast to get to all the dirt and debris. The other way is to put a plumbing snake or an auger to clean the inside of the downspout. A thorough clean will ensure that the trough and downspout remain clear.
Sometimes though, the damage is more serious and an expert needs to come in and carry out repairs. For example, the trough may be sagging and need to be aligned. An expert should do this because sealed joints can come apart if they are not handled correctly. It may also be that brackets need to be repositioned.
The problem may also be pinhole leaks in the troughs or the connections. These need to be repaired with silicone caulking compounds. They can also be fixed using patching kits in case of big leaks but this works only temporarily. An expert will determine whether it would be best to replace the troughs. For galvanized eavestroughs, joints need to be soldered and for steel galvanized ones, the surface needs to be cared for in a particular way.
Other checks also need to be made; the straps and hangers, the drainage, splash blocks, dry wells and other parts and functions. An expert is best placed to take care of this and carry out any eavestrough repairs that are required. To prevent problems in future, have them do periodic checks as well.
