Creating a Tree Silhouette Mural in a Bedroom

Murals are trendy for almost any room in a modern home, but are especially creative and interesting choices for the bedroom. Most people choose murals and scenic vistas only for children\’s rooms, but creating a tree silhouette mural in a bedroom for a teenager or adult is a contemporary choice that is unique, and it offers a great starting point for the rest of the room\’s decor. While it does take some research to learn effective and efficient techniques for drawing a tree silhouette, for example, you do not have to have a lot of experience or take art lessons to create something that works well for your bedroom space.

Start with something very simple if it is your first major art project, and do not try to tackle a project that will leave you feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. A silhouette is ultimately far easier than painting a detailed tree obviously, but it is still a big project and can dramatically affect the entire look of the room. It is usually a lot easier to work with an example to look at, such as a drawing on paper, or a stencil to base your lines on, so that you have a really good idea of what the finished project should resemble.

Stencils and sketches are the easiest starting point for creating a tree silhouette, and this method is one of the smartest designs for a new and budding artist. You can choose the colors that coordinate with your room\’s decor, and simply paint the silhouette to have a finished project. For those with only limited artistic experience, silhouettes are among the best ideas because they are simple and beginner-friendly, without the necessity of understanding shadowing, shading, and color palettes. In most cases, for a tree silhouette you need only one shade to complement your room\’s decor.

An overhead projector is a great tool for painting a mural, but they can be tricky to rent and a little expensive to purchase just for one project. If you have several projects in mind, or need an overhead projector for a different purpose, it is a great investment. However, it is not cost-efficient to purchase one just for painting a tree silhouette in a bedroom, and you can usually achieve the same look with a stencil kit. The projector does make painting the silhouette very easy though, and if you have one or can borrow or rent one easily it is a great way to almost ensure a more professional result.

Choosing the color should not be a huge project, and when in doubt, always stick with basic black or a charcoal gray. Dark walls need a light-colored tree, such as a great tan or white, and light walls should have a contrasting color as well. For a more subtle tree silhouette, find a color that is a few shades darker or lighter than the color of the wall. This is a great idea if you just want something basic and interesting without being the room\’s major focal point.
