The Sky is Not the Limit Anymore
Strictly government agencies first made use of the internet. Now, nearly everyone has access to the world wide web. Home computers are as common as televisions. Laptops follow people around like pets. That\’s because the internet today isn\’t just a luxury, it\’s a necessity. It\’s not something we use simply to check our email anymore.
The internet is invaluable for students of any age and any subject. The internet makes research a breeze. No more do we go through a library\’s card catalog with its high learning curve just to understand or dusty cracked old microfiche which may or may not be viewable. Now we google.
People on the other side of 30 years of age will remember that their parents grew up with a typewriter complete with ribbon and carbon paper to accomplish all their paper work. Their older siblings actually had to go to the library and use the card catalogs to find reference books to complete their high school reports. They also undoubtedly made use of the library\’s computer to type them out. Computers in those days were not considered a household necessity.
What an incredible difference a couple of decades and the personal computer and internet have made in our lives. Many today depend on the computer not only for studying but for their careers.
The internet has revolutionized modern times much as the printing press did in the days of yore. Information on every subject is available to everyone. Local and world news for good and for bad is at our fingertips. Decision making is much easier with the internet as the facts are there for the googling.
Search engines like Yahoo and Google take us anywhere we want to go. (Sometimes they lead us astray). They mostly do their job well. For example, my son just ran his first high fever. I wasn\’t sure if I should take him to the doctor or not. I used the internet to research his symptoms. I found that a really high fever, like he had, can often lead to an ear infection. So I knew that it was probably best for me to go ahead and take him to the doctor. The internet isn\’t a diagnostic tool. It does, however, help us make more informed decisions.
Social politics are also within the realm of the internet. Type “the Day of Rage on January 25, 20ll” into your search engine. You will find how it ignited the Egyptian revolution and with it, the Arab Spring. This originated on a Facebook page. Prior to the internet it would have been months for information to reach an entire country. Now it is seconds. The power of the internet is mighty indeed.
Most of us are so accustomed to having access to the internet everywhere we go. We don\’t realize how different our lives would be without it. It is am aspect of our lives that truly encompasses ideas of freedom. Anyone can use the internet for a wide variety of things. Some for ill and some for good. To teach. To share. To close the gaps in cultures caused by misunderstanding and misinformation. From online shopping, to the ability to organize a nationwide revolution, you can keep soaring into new possibilities.
