Six Steps to a Better Life With Hypertension

Hypertension is the proper medical term for high blood pressure which means that the pressure in which your blood is pumped through your body is too high. High blood pressure is one of the leading health conditions within the US alone and can be attributed to many different factors such as excessive stress, weight gain, smoking, disease and poor diet among others.

If you have recently learned that you have hypertension you may be feeling unsure of your future and a little scared. After all, having high blood pressure does often mean altering your lifestyle and sometimes giving up some of the things you love . . . but this doesn’t mean that you cannot live a happy, long and fulfilling life with a few simple steps.

Keep your appointments with your doctor.

The horror stories you hear about hypertension are often attributed to those who didn’t stay on top of their care. If you keep your appointments and work with your doctor to find out what medications work best for you, you are on the fast track to living a healthier life. There is absolutely no reason that you cannot live a long and healthy life!

Take your medications regularly and as prescribed.

It is never a good idea to yoyo your blood pressure medication. You should never stop taking your medication without first consulting with your doctor and getting a new prescription. Take control of your hypertension by reading your blood pressure at home. This will also help your doctor know if you are on the proper medication. Just because one doesn’t work doesn’t mean that another won’t. You simply have to go through some trial and error until you learn if you need a BETA blocker or a water pill based mediation.

Don’t stress.

Hypertension is not the end of the world. You can live a long and healthy life with high blood pressure if you work to control it. In addition, stress is the worst enemy of hypertension. Stress is a natural blood pressure raiser. It’s a good idea to practice relaxation techniques and learn to control your stress in better ways. This is a great excuse to take up a hobby and find some time for yourself.

Limit your salt intake.

Though salt is a normal part of a balanced diet too much of a good thing can be unhealthy, especially for someone with high blood pressure. If you love salt there is a salt substitute that is extremely close to the real deal. However, it is high in potassium so you should check with your doctor before ingesting it in high amounts as potassium isn’t good for some heart conditions.

Exercise under doctor supervision.

Exercise is great or heart health but it should always be a joint decision between you and your doctor. Not all exercises are fit for someone with hypertension. Consult your doctor to find out what your limits are and what routines are best for you.

Relax! Don’t worry!

It is important to remember that you are not alone. There are many people in the world with high blood pressure who live long, healthy and happy lives. Just because you have high blood pressure it doesn’t mean you need to live in fear. With the proper care, you can live a life as long and happy as someone without it.
