Magnet Business Card Design Tips
There are many substances today that can be used for printing. Many printing companies can print on paper, plastic, metal, and even magnets. Two popular options for magnet marketing include the magnet business card and the car door magnet. Various materials with iron in them are attracted to magnets (including steel), and since a large number of objects contain iron, you can display your business card or other printed magnet for marketing purposes, and without the requirement of pinning or sticking the promotional material to a background object. Other metals also attract magnets, but not as strongly as iron.
1. Before you have them printed, think about what the magnets will stick to and how big they should be. Typically, printing companies offer car door magnets that measure 12″ X 18″ or 12″ X 24″, and magnet business cards that are 2″ x 3.5″. However, just because they are called car door magnets doesn’t necessarily mean they must be stuck on a vehicle. Any sufficiently large magnetic metal surface will hold them. The business card magnets can be stuck on a fridge or on a metal surface in an office such as a filing cabinet or metal window trim.
2. Choose the physical options. Many printing companies will offer printing on 30 mil magnets that are UV-coated for a more reflective coating that offers protection from dirt and moisture. This is thick enough to be durable, but not so thick as to be too expensive or too heavy. There may be an option on the printing company’s drop-down menu to round the corners of the car door magnets or magnet business cards, though there could be an additional fee. This will give your magnets a non-standard appearance that should draw added attention from viewers.
3. Choose the design options. A printing company will typically offer three design options for a magnet business card. You can upload your print-ready design to the company’s website, along with artwork, text and photos, or you can choose from pre-made design templates. The last option is to allow the printing company’s graphic artists to design the magnet business card for an additional fee. If your organization does not have the time or resources to design your own card, but you still want a unique appearance, this is an excellent option. Many printing companies will not offer pre-made design templates for the car door magnets, since they are more of a specialty item, though the other two design options should be available.
4. Do not crowd the design. Too much graphics or text on a magnet business card will look unprofessional. Making the text too small to be easily readable is not wise, either. Similarly, overly large text can look bad. Adding enough white space is particularly important for a car door magnet. White space is defined as an area of the design where no color or text is added. A lack of white space can make the design too cluttered and not pleasing enough to the viewer.
