The Benefits You Gain If You Study English

Many people wish to study English due to the depth of understanding that such learning can provide. Many literary texts contain issues that we all grapple with in our everyday lives. Such texts also promote ethical and cultural values to which we all aspire.

When this is done in the context of a compelling story with characters a reader can emphasize with, we call it great literature. The aesthetic pleasure that can be derived from such a text can engage the reader in a way a technical philosophical treatise outlining the same issues and values never can. But there is more to literary learning than aesthetic enjoyment of literature.

Learning how to analyze the language involved in a written work is not as simple as it sounds. Etymology (the origin of particular words), grammar, how context and culture affect language and how the use of humor can be interpreted are just some of the topics that you will be trained on. Acquiring a more sophisticated appreciation for how we communicate is an important product of such training.

The various forms of literature that such a course introduces you to also require due appreciation. Whether it is poetry, novels, plays, comedy, tragedy or drama, you learn to judge a text based on both it\’s construction and on it\’s historical context. Other factors such as themes and the particular tradition in which a given text was created are also given fair appraisal.

Being able to develop your own perspective and analysis of a text is an important part of your research. In being able to present your views and impressions in a logical fashion, you develop your critical faculties and your own written abilities. Making an articulate analysis of your chosen text is indispensable to doing well in this sort of course.

Ultimately, though, doing well in such a course depends upon your own preferences prior to starting such work. If you enjoy reading and writing, and are fascinated by words, you should do well in this type of course. But it is not enough to just like reading, you have to like analyzing what you read as well.

Also take account of the fact that a lot of the work in this course has to be completed independently by you for that reason. It is not the lecturers or professors analytical abilities that will be graded or assessed in examinations. It is your work, and yours alone, that is being assessed. Thus, while your instructors can certainly provide you with guidance, your own literary acuity is paramount to successful completion of your course.

The rewards, both personal and professional, that you can derive by choosing to study English are worth the effort, though. You hone your critical and creative faculties through the scrutiny of literary texts. This is not only a great personal skill to have in it\’s own right, but can also be used as a transferable skill in the workplace, where being able to analyze complex information and provide articulate criticism are seen as valuable workplace skills to possess.
