Weight loss is associated with several myths. These myths misguide and confuse people following weight loss programs. Listed below are some of the popular myths and facts.

Myth: Fad diets are meant for permanent weight loss

Fact: Fad diets often promise very quick results. You may lose pounds rapidly in the first two weeks. But losing weight quickly is not good for your health as you are at risk of developing gall stones and the low calorie food that you eat may lead to abnormal heart beat and other heart diseases. Fad diets will not supply the required nutrients to your body.

You can lose up to two pounds a week by adapting a healthy life style, eating moderately and doing exercise.

Myth: Low carbohydrate and high protein diet is one of the healthy diets to lose weight

Fact: Eating more protein and lowering the carbohydrate intake is not considered a balanced diet. Intake of less than 130 grams of carbohydrates per day may result in gout or kidney stones. In such a diet, you tend to eat more high protein fat foods like cheese, eggs and meat. Due to lack of dietary fiber in these diets, you may suffer from constipation, feel weak and tired.

Myth: In a weight loss diet, starches should be limited.

Fact: Several foods that are high in starches are actually low in calories and fat. Examples are cereals, rice, pasta, bread, fruits, beans and few vegetables like yam and potato. If you eat these foods in large quantities or top them up with fatty toppings like mayonnaise, sour cream and butter, you consume more calories which, results in gaining weight. Starches are also called complex carbohydrates, and they are an essential source of energy for the body.

Myth: You should not snack while on a weight loss diet.

Fact: Weight gain occurs when you consume more calories. Whether you eat three times or six times, you should be conscious about the number of calories the foods carry. If you want to have snacks in between meals, then you should have your meals in limited quantities.

Myth: You need to just exercise for weight loss, need not bother about diet.

Fact: Consuming more calories is always easier than losing those calories. Hence, you need to cut down on your calories as well and exercise for rapid weight loss. Boot camp workouts are one of the best exercise regimes that aim at rapid weight loss. It is also a healthier option to lose weight.

Myth: You should skip meals to lose weight.

Fact: Several studies reveal that anyone who skips breakfast is more likely to gain weight as compared to someone who eats breakfast as well as eats four to five times in a day. The reason is, if you skip breakfast, you feel hungry by lunch time and you are likely to eat more and consume more calories. You can control your appetite by eating at least four to six times in limited quantities.

Whatever diet you may follow, it should comprise of all the nutrients and essential components. A well balanced diet coupled with exercise is the key to lose weight in a healthy way.
