Traveling With Pets
It seems as though our pets have come to define and expand who we are now more than ever. There are entire television shows devoted to pet behavior, good, bad, and bizarre. Photos are constantly circulating of celebrities who style their pets, dress them, accessorize them, and build over the top homes for them. So it just goes to follow that now, when we travel, the idea of kenneling our best friends, or leaving them at home with a friend of family member just seems out of the question. Traveling with a pet can be simple if you keep a few things in mind: plan well ahead and make sure your four-legged companion is welcome everywhere you want to take him.
First, check with your destination. Are you staying with friends or family? Make sure they know to expect your little buddy, and see that their home is safe for your pet. If there is not a fenced in yard, you’ll want to scope out pet-friendly parks for your dog. If you’re bringing your cat, make sure there aren’t doggie doors through which she might escape (and dogs that will frighten her).
If the people who are putting you up have pets, make sure you have a plan B for animals who simply are unable to socialize. This may involve keeping them in separate parts of the house or staying elsewhere. If you plan to stay in a hotel or B&B, make sure they are pet-friendly. Most lodgings charge a small fee for pets; familiarize yourself with their policy before you arrive to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
Some hotels require that your pet remain in her crate at all times. Others forbid owners to leave pets unattended. Not realizing these rules can potentially ruin you and your pet’s good time. However, if you arrange ahead of time, you may be able to find a doggie day care at your destination that will free you up to visit, sightsee, or do business each day.
Now, if you’re going to fly, be triple sure of the airline’s rules about pet carriers. Can you stow the crate under your seat, or will you need to check you pet in as freight. If you’re really lucky, you may be able to use an airline like Pet Airways, which is geared toward pet owners and their companions, and has more relaxed rules about pets. Either way, your pet may become stressed in these unfamiliar circumstances, so before you leave, try to acquaint your pet with the carrier. Put his favorite toys and treats, and a blanket inside, and lead him into the carrier now and then until he willingly goes inside on his own. If the carrier is a place where your pet feels safe and comfortable, your trip will be much better for both of you. Keep a familiar toy and a soft blanket in the crate during your trip so he will be comfy.
Try not to give your pet food or water for a couple of hours before the flight, either. The flight and the stress could make his stomach upset, and he’ll be miserable until you can clean him up. The more you prepare for traveling with your pet, the easier the trip will be on both of you, and soon, you won’t be able to imagine going away without him.
