Keeping Safe With Citalopram

Citalopram, or known for its trade name Celexa, is one of the most popular medications being prescribed to people suffering from depressive states. The drug is classified under the category of SSRI or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which means that the mechanism of action is by hindering the re-entry of the serotonin neurotransmitter to the brain which consequently decreases the level of serotonin in the brain. A decreased amount of serotonin would also diminish the manifestations of problems such as MDD or major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder or OCD; and physiologic ones such as fibromyalgia, neuropathy, autism and dementia.

The onset of antidepressant effects takes place in a matter of two weeks. But even though the drug effects have not occurred yet, a cause of concern when taking this medication would be the depressive or mental illness increasing in severity. The person taking this drug must never be left alone and safety should be ensured at all times.

In general, the Citalopram side effects are mild and do not pose threat to the life of the individual. The most commonly seen side effects are changes in the sleeping pattern of the individual with most people having difficulty of falling asleep in the night or insomnia, which in turn causes them to become drowsy, yawn excessively, have difficulty concentrating, and experience fatigue easily. A common remedy for this problem would be to take power naps and create an environment conducive to sleep and rest.

Other Citalopram side effects which include dryness of the mouth and a feeling of nausea that leads to changes in appetite and weight; increased perspiration, shakiness or trembling, increased frequency of urination, decreased coordination, nasal stuffiness, light headedness, and changes in bowel movement. These changes can be attributed to the decreased levels of serotonin in the body, since this neurotransmitter is distributed throughout the body.

One of the most bothersome and frequently complained Citalopram side effects would be the changes in the sexual and reproductive pattern of the individual, because this problem does not only affect the individual taking the medication but also the partner. These side effects include the delayed or inability of the person to achieve orgasm, lack or reduction in sex drive, and women may suffer irregular menstrual periods.

Some of the serious Citalopram side effects would include sudden changes in the mood that may predispose ideations of suicide and self harm to the person, which is also the reason why the drug is not recommended among patients below 18 years of age. A rarely seen side effect from taking the drug would be changes in the cardio-respiratory system such as rapid changes in the blood pressure, shortness or difficulty breathing, and abnormal heart rate.

Other serious and life threatening Citalopram side effects include seizures, hallucinations and highly violent reactions that may lead to injury to both self and other people; anaphylaxis or severe allergy, and changes in the blood exemplified by unusual bruising and presence of black, tarry stools.
