Chronic Pain Booms With Baby Boomers

The baby boomers have always given importance youth vitality and health more than any other generation. They are the health-conscious generation, the seekers of the fountain of youth, and the generation of orthodontic braces and birth control pills. They are the ones who expect nothing but the best health care and medication.

But the baby boomers are now getting old. And as one grows old, pains and aches start to creep in. Bones weaken, arteries get clogged, muscles atrophy, and the list goes on. Those are the hard facts of life. Most pains that are felt in this age group (40’s to 60’s) are caused by degenerative changes in the muscular system and skeletal system. Many of the usual complaints of baby boomers are back pain, leg pain, joint pain, neck pain, pain from injuries and falls. As age progresses, pain progresses as well.

Pain Management Methods

A variety of pain management methods are available today. Pain management clinics offer both conservative pain management and treatments and complementary or alternative pain treatments. Some even encourage the integrative approach or a combination of different pain management techniques.

Pain Medication

Many rely on over-the-counter pain medication. And why not? They are readily available, highly effective, fast-acting and you don’t need a doctor’s prescription to buy them. The health risks and dangers of long-term use, overdose, misuse and abuse of over-the-counter pain medications are quite alarming. Yes, the pain killers may cure your pain but they may also give rise to other more serious or even fatal illnesses. The same goes for prescription medicines. Any form of misuse of these pain medications can lead to various side effects. This is why many people have started to minimize their dependence on pain killers. This does not mean though that one should no longer take pain medications. It only means that people would have to act more responsibly and take pain medications only when necessary.

Alternative Treatments

Among the popular methods in alternative pain management are the age-old traditional Chinese or oriental medicine. Acupuncture is one of the most sought after and one of the most effective traditional pain treatments. Also gaining popularity is Ayurvedic medicine or the traditional Indian medical system. Other alternative treatments include hypnosis, biofeedback, visual imagery or MRI scanning, meditation, yoga, tai chi, counselling, chiropractic, massage therapy, reflexology, aromatherapy, group therapies, and even music therapy. Herbal and dietary supplements are also climbing the list of preferred medication and pain treatment.

Future of Baby Boomers

Everyone hopes and expects to live their lives to the fullest. The baby boomers will be the last ones to take all these sitting down. Surely, they can’t possibly prevent or stop ageing. The most they can do is to try to live a quality life despite getting weak and getting old. The best that they can do is to live the rest of their years as actively and youthfully as they can – boomer style.
