Senior Home Care and Elderly Support
There are a number of things that can be done to provide the needs of an elderly family member. The most coveted place by the elderly person is to remain at home with their loved ones whenever possible. Senior home care can result in the caregiver having multiple tasks to perform depending on the health of their loved one.
Home living requires forethought. Your parents mental and physical needs must be considered and if they have any special needs. Illnesses like Alzheimer\’s and dementia are two behavioral changes that require special needs. The family physician should play a part in the decisions you make regarding these ailments.
It is a good idea to have a family discussions with other siblings. Watching over an older relative can be exhausting depending on their physical condition. Siblings should play a role in the needs of the individual and allow you time to get away and relax. If there is no one to offer assistance, you may have to consider nursing home placement.
If you choose to take your loved one in, there are many home services to be taken advantage of. Although you will provide most of the companionship you can arrange for others to come in and visit. This gives you a chance to get away and do other things such as shopping, or taking advantage of a lunch date. A friend may offer their services at no cost.
If a relative is ambulatory your home should be inspected for safety precautions. It should be neat and clutter kept off the floor to prevent trips and falls. Bathrooms may require safety handles around bathing areas. The toilet may require a heightened platform that will make it easy for the elderly to get up and down. If your loved one happens to be bed ridden, someone who is trained can perform baths and see to their sanitary needs.
Medications are a priority to keep the elderly in good physical condition. This is not a difficult task. All that is required is administering medications as specified. Meal preparation is another fairly common area with your loved one eating meals along with the rest of the family. When your family member is ambulatory, you can take them for doctor visits; to see an old friend; have their hair done; or just to go for a ride.
The elderly are often confused when taking care of monetary issues. You may want to speak with them about becoming a Power of Attorney. You can help them reach financial decisions and make out checks for anything they need to pay or purchase. This is not a job to be taken lightly because a Power of Attorney is legally responsible for these monies.
Senior home care can be an exhausting position to put oneself in but when you are prepared it can be an easy transition to make. Take advantage of care givers and don\’t allow yourself to feel that you are responsible for all their needs. You must take care of yourself. Keep in mind that elderly parents love their children. They do not want to see you giving up your life for their care.
