Music is a fantastic way to calm and relax the mind, body and soul. At the end of a long and stressful workday, wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to indulge in a few minutes of total relaxation, with soothing music playing in the background. Surprisingly, what one person thinks of as ‘soothing’ is not necessarily the same as another person. Some people find r&b instrumentals restful, while others say this type of music evokes feelings of tension and anxiety.

Two friends of ours have recently decided to go all out to make their own r&b music. They say only in this way can they express themselves properly, and this in turn will bring about much satisfaction. According to them, this is a sure fire method to feel all soothed out.

To add, if the music they create is good, then it can calm other people too. If carried out properly, there will be so many positive outputs from this project. So they studied as much as they could about the world of music and how to create it well. They listened to all kinds of genres, and felt that their decision to stick with r&b to be a wise decision.

Our friends are actually a couple. They are a husband and wife team bent at trying out all sorts of things to achieve what they call a ‘life worth living’. So Pam got down to work by writing some lyrics, while George focused on creating the beats.

Unfortunately they did not go very far. Pam was OK – she came up with a number of good lyrics, and felt satisfied with them. It was a therapeutic exercise, she said. But George was getting aggravated. He found it difficult to come up with beats which he thought would be suitable for Pam’s lyrics. Increasingly feeling frustrated and discouraged, Pam wondered if they were doing this the right way. Obviously, George was cranky and grumpy. He was supposed to enjoy it. After all, the project started out as a search for a soothing life experience.

Fortunately, it wasn’t long until they came across another method of approaching this. They found a website that talked about acquiring ready-made instrumentals, and a whole lot more out there in cyber space. When they tried a couple of those, the beats seemed to go quite well with Pam’s lyrics, with some minor adjustments.

The couple did not look back since then. They acquired some beats, and worked on them. Their focus now changed from composing both lyrics and beats to composing lyrics only, and selecting the right beats to go along with the lyrics. Once the right match of lyric and beat was found, the Pam and George then went ahead and sang their first song together, recording it appropriately. This, to them, was the ultimate soothing experience.

They found the right formulae of putting pre-made r&b instrumentals to work for them. They have been doing much of this ever since.
