MEAC Basketball Update
Norfolk State 90, Morgan State 89
Norfolk State overcame a second half deficit to upend Morgan State in double overtime 90-89 last Saturday in MEAC basketball play.
Kyle O’Quinn scored 25 points to lead the Spartans.
Norfolk State (13-5, 5-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) remained atop the MEAC despite 33 points by Dewayne Jackson. Twenty came in the first half as Morgan State (3-11, 1-2) led 43-36 at halftime, later by as many as 17 points.
Norfolk State rallied to tie the game at 74-all with 21 seconds left on the first of three foul shots by O\’Quinn. Two more put the Spartans ahead at 76-74, but Aric Brooks\’ two foul shots forced overtime.
Marcus Tamares hit three free throws to give Norfolk State an 84-81 lead, but Brooks\’ three foul shots forced a second overtime.
Ian Chiles scored to give Morgan State its last lead, 89-88. Tamares hit a jumper with 1:08 left, but the Bears missed three shots in the last 27 seconds.
Coppin State 83, Hampton 66
Coppin State cruised to an 83-66 win over Hampton last Saturday in a MEAC basketball showdown.
Four players scored in double figures for the Eagles with Logan Wiens leading the way with 23 points.
Wiens hit 7 of 11 shots from the floor, going 3 for 7 from 3-point range. Coppin State (8-9, 3-1) had a huge advantage at the foul line. The Eagles were 28 for 36, while Hampton was 8 for 20.
Tony Gallo\’s 15 points for Coppin State included nine free throws, one more than Hampton\’s team total.
Antonio Williams and Akeem Ellis scored 12 points apiece, with Williams grabbing 21 rebounds.
It was basically a two-man game for Hampton (6-11, 2-2). Darrion Pellum scored 26 points, making six 3-pointers. Mike Tuitt came off the bench to score 25. But the other Pirates combined for only 15 points.
Bethune-Cookman 82, SC State 76
Bethune-Cookman edged South Carolina State 82-76 last Saturday afternoon in MEAC basketball play.
Adrien Coleman scored 19 points to lead five players in double-figures for the Wildcats.
Anthony Breeze added 15 points, Kevin Dukes and Garrius Holloman chipped in 12 each and Ricky Johnson had 11 for Bethune-Cookman (6-12, 3-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
The Wildcats, averaging 58.8 points per game coming in, shot 51.8 percent from the field (19 of 56).Coleman was 8-for-12 shooting, and Bethune-Cookman made 6 of 10 from 3-point range.
It was the 11th straight loss for the Bulldogs, who were giving up 79.9 points per game.
Khalif Toombs led the Bulldogs (4-13, 0-4) with 16 points. Presano Bell added 15, Luka Radovic 14 and Shaquil Barber 12 for South Carolina State.
The Bulldogs trailed 46-35 at halftime and shot 54.2 percent from the field (26 of 48).
Savannah State 69, Florida A&M 58
Savannnah State won its fourth conference game after beating Florida A&M 69-58 last Saturday afternoon.
Rashad Hassan led four players in double figures with 17 points for the Tigers.
Savannah State (8-9, 4-1 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) shot 47.1 percent (24 of 51) from the field and held Florida A&M to just 38.6 percent (22 of 57) shooting.
The Rattlers (3-15, 1-3) cut the Tigers\’ four-point halftime lead to two after a Jeremy Dean steal and fast break layup. But Savannah State scored 11 straight to jump ahead 41-28.
The Tigers led by 17 twice in the second half.
Dean and Amin Stevens led Florida A&M with 12 points apiece and Yannick Crowder added 11. Stevens also had a game-high 10 boards.
Despite forcing 15 Savannah State turnovers, the Rattlers only scored 15 points off turnovers compared to 19 for the Tigers.
Maryland-Eastern Shore 63, Delaware State 60
Maryland-Eastern Shore defeated Delaware State in overtime 63-60 last Saturday in MEAC basketball play.
Pina Guillaume made a jumper with 31 seconds remaining in the overtime period to seal the win for the Hawks.
UMES (4-12, 1-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) led by as many as 12 points early in the second half. But Delaware State rallied and tied the game at 55, sending it into overtime on Marques Oliver\’s free throw with 32 seconds left.
Maryland-Eastern Shore trailed 60-59 with 1:42 remaining in OT after Delaware State\’s Casey Walker knocked down a 3-pointer. But the Hawks pulled ahead for good on a jumper by Guillaume — his only score of the game.
Ronald Spencer scored 17 points and Percy Woods added 13 for Maryland-Eastern Shore.
Oliver had his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Hornets (4-10, 1-2), who lost their seventh straight. Walker led Delaware State with 15 points and Tahj Tate had 13.
