Most police officers are required to retire at age fifty. However, just because a man or woman retires as a police officer doesn’t mean they should stop being involved altogether in law enforcement. At age fifty, they may not be as capable of chasing down a lawbreaker on foot, but they can still have a great deal of useful skills. In fact, they should have much more knowledge of law enforcement than when they graduated from the academy. Why not put their vast knowledge and expertise to use in other related jobs?

After twenty to thirty years in the field, most police officer’s retirements aren’t that bad, lowering their need for an additional high paying job. Most retired cops want to either stay involved in their related field or just earn a few extra bucks here and there. Some love the thrill of apprehending criminals and want to keep in touch with that aspect of public service. There are a lot of good jobs available with descent pay that can utilize their expertise without demanding the same physical fitness they have been expected to deliver in their previous years.

One prominent job that is well suited for an ex-cop is that of a private investigator. There are a lot of areas in this line of work that would be ideal for one who has many years’ experience as a beat cop. Police officers are trained to use all of their senses as they observe their surroundings. Many have an instinctual sense about them that helps them see beyond the obvious and “smell out a skunk,” so to speak. This is a job that allows an individual to continue to take the bad guys off the street without being as physical. There are so many different aspects to being a private investigator. They can still get that real sense of accomplishment while solving a case of fraud or helping an individual that may feel threatened, for various reasons.

One of the most common jobs for retired police officers is that of a security officer, AKA security guard. These jobs are available in a number of settings. Security officers are needed in a number of locations. Hospitals often have their own security staff or may contract that out to a security company. The same is true of malls and shopping centers. Many businesses hire a security company to patrol the area surrounding their establishments when no one is working. Often times, hotels and resorts have security people on staff to assure their guests’ safety. Banks additionally have the need for security guards.

Another business that employs retired cops is the armor transport business. There are a number of companies that provide this service. These armored guards travel from business to business, picking up the cash that has been collected by major department stores, banks, and even universities.

Night clubs often have a bouncer employed to make sure things don’t get out of hand. This is a job that can also be ideal for a retired police officer; one who is large in stature with some strength to back it up! You don’t necessarily have to be able to run fast, but may need to flex your muscle at times, and size does that!

Some celebrities hire body guards to keep them safe or to keep people from crowding them too much. A few years ago at the celebrity golf tournament in South Lake Tahoe, I was able to meet Michael Jordan’s personal body guard, as I walked 18 holes, following Michael Jordan and John Elway. Although I didn’t get to talk with Michael, however I did have a long conversation with his guard. He told me that he shares those duties with one other personal guard, who travel with Jordan as he goes from one event to another. He did a great job of keeping everyone at a distance from Michael, simply by virtue of his size and demeanor.

Depending on the degree one has, it may be possible to go on to law school and become a lawyer. Many who have been in law enforcement have a criminal defense degree. Some even have a Master’s degree. Some of these individuals may want to go into education and teach at the college or university level. Others may want to teach at the police academy.

Just because you are retired doesn’t mean you can’t find good related employment. There are a lot of different areas for you to pursue. But you need to make sure you look in the right places. A good place to start is online. There are a number of sites available that list available jobs. Some allow you to search for specific jobs. You may need to pick up the phone and call various businesses. The yellow pages may help you with that. You may know individuals that are already involved in your area of interest. Or you may need to contact your local community college or university.
