As my grandmother has gotten older, she has lost some of her abilities to do those things she used to be able to do when she was young. Her husband had passed away years ago and her children have grown up, moved out, and started to have families of their own.

For an eighty-seven year old woman, she is pretty active and does quite well living on her own. However, there are times when she needs help with some of the little things around her house.

She has a hard time opening jars because of the arthritis in her hands. And she will often forget whether she washed a dish or not.

This is a common situation that we will all find ourselves in as we get older. No longer are we independent and able to do everything on our own.

It does help to live near family and friends so that when she needs it, we can come right over and help her out. But not everyone is so lucky to have those kinds of people live nearby them.

We have helped her make a few accommodations throughout the years. Finding a television that is able to play movies and have cable all together in one machine has helped her out significantly.

Selling some of her furniture and cleaning out some of the junk from her house has given her less to worry about taking care of. Going through her garage and getting rid of the stuff that she hasn’t used for years helps make it so that she isn’t overwhelmed with everything.

Another thing that has helped her out a lot these past couple of years is living with her for a couple of days every so often. Our family lives close enough to her that we were able to do this a couple of weekends a month and several times during the summer.

Something that we started noticing about ten years ago was that she was no longer able to clean her house properly. She wasn’t able to bend over and scrub the floors nor was she able to pick up heavy items that needed to be moved while vacuuming.
