Vinyl windows have long been punted as a good, cheap alternative to aluminium or wooden frames. Plasticizers mix very easily and bond tightly with PVC so there is some dispute about how common the leeching effect really is. However, claims of negative health consequences due to leeching are common and it is a contested debate. Most people prefer to avoid the risk.

However, the PVC that is used to make frames is the unplasticized one. In other words it is not mixed, and is called uPVC for short. This material is used for many purposes in building. As well as frames it may also be used for siding and weatherboarding.

Vinyl windows were a popular alternative, but as they age people are clearly seeing that they are not the best option. Those who still choose this option usually only do so because they have been poorly advised. It is wiser to spend more money initially on wood or aluminium then suffer the effect of a poorer quality material.
