The Basic Components of Drama and Public Speaking Training

It is no news that most adults would rather go to the dentist than speak in front of a crowd. And the fact is that people are thought many things throughout their educational life but public speaking is definitely not one of those things. In time, communication gaps turn into inability to properly address other people in a natural manner. The whole purpose of drama and public speaking training is therefore directed towards improving communication skills in almost any given life situation from the simple delivery of an oral report to speaking in front of a group.

Whether you are 5 or 95, drama and public speaking training involves the same values and principles. They are the basics of public speaking which you simply can’t do without no matter if you want to simply overcome your inability to communicate with others naturally or you wish to become a cinema star. Whatever your purpose is, drama and public speaking is about diction, volume, eye contact, confidence, improvisational skills, and expansive vocabulary.

Diction is the first and most important aspect of drama and public speaking training. It is about correctly and clearly enunciating words and it doesn’t require special talents but it does require practice. The ability to have a natural control of the vocal chords and diaphragm is one of the goals of training courses on drama and public speaking. In this case, the rule that says practice makes perfect is very true.

Eye contact is a matter of granting the public your personal attention without actually being personally affected by the actual contact. It is a manner of looking straight in their eyes without actually doing so. Only a great educator has the ability to properly induce this learned behavior of controlling the crowd through direct eye contact. And that very well can be applied in board meetings, seminars, or other public speaking situations as a benefit of drama and public speaking training.

Many people would say that confidence should be the key component of drama and public speaking training courses. Actually, confidence comes with the acknowledgement of your abilities. Therefore, once you are perfectly aware of what you can do, confidence becomes a matter of expression and nothing more. Everybody is good at something and when they expose that aptitude they do it in front of a crowd looking for that particular something. Live actors perform for theatre lovers not for movie fans. Musicians perform for people who love music and not for a public expecting a car show.

The other two elements of drama and public speaking training are improvisational skills and an expansive vocabulary. Actually the two are kind of intermingling as a rich vocabulary is the tool of improvisation. Sometimes, the public reacts contrary to the expectations and speakers only have a split of a second to turn the situation from a fiasco into a success. Learning how to employ words in a turning point situation is the secret of great public speakers but also the secret of the best trainers in the field.
