HO Scale Model Trains

HO scale model trains are the most commonly used size model. The \”O\” in HO refers to the type of gauge used, and simply means that this model train is 1:48 the size of a regular locomotive. The gauge of the O model is 1.25 inches, and the \”HO\” model trains are literally half the size of, or 1/87th the size of a real locomotive. It is safe to say that many train hobbyists will disagree on which model suits them best. Some hobbyists like models that can be placed outside while others like to keep their set up in a closet or a smaller space. This reason is very fact why models come in many sizes as to accompany any and every hobbyist.

HO scale trains were first manufactured in 1930 in the United Kingdom. At this particular time, the OO scale model was incredibly popular and the HO was manufactured in order to compete for some of the market share that the OO scale had. It wasn\’t until the 1950s that United States hobbyists learn about the HO scale trains that were being sold in England and then created a demand for them to be sold here. By the 1960s, the HO model became one of the most popular trains to be purchased in the United States and is still the train of choice for many model train hobbyists.

Since the HO model is so prevalent in the United States, it is not hard to find a wide variety of supplies with an average price point available for many manufacturers of the HO model. In fact, if you visit any online store or any brick-and-mortar hobby store, you\’re bound to find more than your fair share of supplies and parts for the HO model train. It is very easy to find many different types of layouts for both tracks and scenery for the HO model. Because of the size of the this particular model, having extremely realistic scenery that is pleasant to the eye is definitely not a problem. The HO model scale is now the standard in model trains as mentioned, however, if you have young children around it is very important to keep the train in a safe location so it cannot be torn apart.

Although the train cars are a little too large to be swallowed and thus do not pose a choking risk, the HO model is not as durable as some of the larger scale train models on the market. Again, everyone has a difference preference as to which model train suits them the best, it can be argued that the HO model, due to its size, can provide the most realistic of train set ups and displays known the model train world. The HO scale model is not only affordable, but there are enough accessories available that can provide you with the ability to set up 3 to 5 completely different tracks in your home that will build provide unique scenery for you and your family.
