The first thing is decide what kind of fish to fish for. To a large extent this will be determined by where you live, at least initially. If you live in the south you will want to fish for bass. If you live in the Rocky Mountains you’ll want to fish for trout. If you live in the northwest or northeast you’ll want to fish for salmon.

Once you decide what you’re fishing for you’re ready to buy tackle. The best places to go shop for used fishing equipment are your local bait and tackle shop. The people in these shops are very knowledgeable about fishing and are will be able to give you specifics on the proper tackle you will need for your region. A growing trend among bait and tackle shops is to sell used equipment. Always ask if they sell used equipment. It is less expensive and a good way to get started. You soon discover that quality fishing tackle will last at least two generations so there is no reason to not buy used equipment.

The basic equipment you\’ll need is a rod and reel, fishing line, sinkers, hooks, lures, crankbait, swimbaits, worms, and salmon eggs. The baits will also depend on your location and what you\’re fishing for. The best reel to begin with is the bait casting reel. They are easy to use and the least likely to tangle up the line. After you get stated you may decide to use a different style of rod and reel, but wait until you have some experience before you go out and sink a whole lot of money into rods and reels.

The next thing is to decide which lake you’re going fishing on. It is mush easier to learn how to fish on a lake or pond than moving water. After that you need to decide if you will fish from the shore or from a boat. Fishing from a boat is more exciting and will you allow you to move from place to place if the fish aren’t biting. If you\’re fishing from a boat a fish finder should be in your future. While it is not a required piece of equipment there are a few anglers who would disagree that they are a pleasure to use. It is generally the boat owner’s responsibility to purchase the fish finder. However, if you’re visualizing yourself fishing while sitting on a lawn chair with a rod set up in front of you and you\’re sipping a cup of coffee or other beverage, then shore fishing is for you.
