Percussion is ingrained somewhere deep in our collective DNA. It\’s why you see people tap time with their fingers and feet, or nod their head in rhythmic response to the music. We can\’t ignore the pulse, and we can\’t help reacting to it. But drummers take this as far as possible. Starting to play drums is a natural response to this tendency, and it\’s a fun instrument to play. If you\’re starting there are a few things you should know about the different kits available. Even if you\’ve played before, it helps to put what\’s available in a wide perspective.

To begin, you\’ll get a basic starter kit that will include a bass drum, snare, two tom toms, a hi-hat and two cymbals. The main thing at this stage is to get a kit from a manufacturer of instruments. This seems obvious, but there are kits sold that are basically toys. To the naked eye they appear like any other drum set, but they\’re cheaper and they\’re not designed for longevity, a critical weakness in an instrument that\’s especially physical. Many reputable companies make entry level kits that will get the job done. They sound good and they\’re designed to withstand the inevitable abuse.

You can buy the kit in a package, and that way you won\’t have to go through a separate process for each drum. Just make sure that every element of the kit meets your needs. It helps to go with a trusted, experienced friend, if you happen to be friends with a drummer.

When you play through your first set is when you really need to take assessment of your needs. You\’ll be experienced yourself and you\’ll know firsthand the value of tough skins, and an overall resilient kit. You\’ll know the value of quality sound, and you\’ll know what sound you like. Once you know your way around the instrument you can feel comfortable investing more money into higher end kits. You\’ll probably develop a loyalty to a company like Yamaha, Pearl, or Reno from using their gear, or from reputation, and you\’ll buy a kit from you preferred brand. Whenever you\’re experimenting with kits in a store, remember it\’ll sound different in different kinds of rooms. Play them for a long time, don\’t be in any hurry, and do your due diligence. Don\’t take a shortcut with an instrument you\’re going to have for a long time. It\’ll be your baby!

At the next stage you can customize your drums, buying a coveted snare here and some Zildjian or Sabian cymbals there. You may play through the components of your kit at different rates of speed, so you don\’t need to replace them all at once. You can buy a new skin if you tear through one, but you may prefer to upgrade wholly rather than patch up what\’s broken. Just remember to buy what compliments your sound, not just what looks good. Always go by sound!
