Words Have Power
It is no secret that WORDS HAVE POWER. Power to heal and power to destroy, power to create and power to break down. All across human history, great minds have agreed that words are more than just, well. . . words.
For example consider the words of Jesus, Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Or Publilius Syrus, Speech is the mirror of the soul; as a man speaks, so he is. Charles Capps believed, \”Words are the most powerful thing in the universe… Words are containers. They contain faith, or fear, and they produce after their kind,\” and Benjamin Franklin stated that, \”Words may show a man\’s wit, but actions his meaning.\”
So words are not simply utterances, or simple sound modulations. They Are expressions of the heart and mind. Yes, they originate in the brain as thought processes, but essentially they are identifiers of the way we feel and think. Our words tell the story of who we are, what we believe and how we live our lives. They express our innermost processes. Words are not just benign expressions; on the contrary, they are potent forces that can do great damage or great good.
If words have such great power, then it goes without saying that it is prudent to choose your words wisely. The words you use on a daily basis either build you up or break you down. They either assist in your success or hamper your progress.
There is a phrase coined by Albert Ellis known as \”cant-stand-it-itis\”. To explain what this is consider common phrases many people use on a day to day basis when they encounter situations they don\’t like. A common one is, \”I can\’t stand it\”! How often have you heard people say, \”I can\’t stand this or I can\’t stand that\”. Now you and I may not use that particular phrase, but we probably express it some other way, possibly like: \”I hate it, I just can\’t deal with that, I can\’t do it, I just can\’t hack it or I can\’t handle that\”. You get the picture! When people use those ways of expressing themselves they typically have contracted a case of \”cant-stand-it-itis\”.
The truth of the matter is, that this is 99% of the time a lie. The reality is you can stand it. If it doesn\’t kill you, well then you can handle it, cant you? But the language we choose to use to express how we feel about the situation is language that makes us think and feel in fatal terms. We convince ourselves that we will die as a result of the experience and therefore we need to avoid it like the Bubonic Plague, which by the way is fatal.
Well, the way some people go one you might believe experiencing rejection is much like contracting the Bubonic Plague? That\’s ridiculous isn\’t it! Rejection is not fatal, whilst contracting that hideous plague is. You might think that idea is silly, but I can assure you we all express situations like that at times. We try hard to convince ourselves and others how bad, for example, rejection is, and how we will just die if we have to go through it.
So what do you think the consequence of expressing yourself this way would be? To answer that question, think about how you would deal with a person with the Bubonic Plague. Would you sit down and entertain them, touch them or share a meal with them. I think not, especially if you planned to be alive in the near future. You would avoid them, keep well away and have nothing to do with them at all, especially if they were a stranger. That would be the only way to ensure you didn\’t contract the virus, isn\’t it?
That\’s the very way many people deal with rejection. They literally run from it as if facing it will be fatal. They use self defeating words like, \”I can\’t stand it\”, when all along they can. But the words \”I can\’t stand it\” tells your unconscious mind that you are in imminent danger, so you go into high alert and run like mad to get out the situation. It\’s an overreaction to a benign situation and the result is self-defeating.
If you were running away to escape contracting the Bubonic Plague, well then we could understand the behaviour, but if you are running away to escape rejection then this is self defeating and not useful in your progress to achieving a better life.
Words, do have immense power and can change your life for the better or worse. It pays then to choose your words wisely as the consequences may be exactly what you are not looking for. There is an old saying that says, the Pen is mightier than the Sword, or in other words, choose your works wisely as they can do more damage than you can imagine.
