Treatments For Hamstring Strain

Among the most common types of injuries among sprinters and hurdle jumpers, hamstring strain would be at the top of the list due to its high percentage of occurrence among these athletes. Hamstring strain treatments can be done naturally or through surgery. However, in most cases surgery is deemed as a last resort or should only be taken if you are looking for quick results (usually done by athletes). Patient’s Role:

– Rest – complete rest or immobilization of the affected body part(s) should be done in order to acquire full healing and recovery. Although movement can be done, it is always much better if you can give your hamstrings a rest especially in this type of situation. The amount of rest does not necessarily require being too much as all it needs is to be able to relax until the pain is gone. The absence of pain will allow a patient to be able to execute other types of treatment and recovery programs.

– Cold Compress – regardless of what grade the injury was diagnosed, cold compress would help a lot in preventing the swelling of the hamstring injury. It also helps alleviate the pain especially when prompt action is made.

– Avoid Resistance – as much as possible, avoid any resistance until the pain is gone as this will not help at all. Although resistance training is required in order to fully regain the lost strength of the muscle tissues, this is not done until a significant amount of pain is decreased.

– Stretching and Strengthening Programs – as soon as pain fades away significantly or completely, the next best thing to do is to execute your stretching program. These are composed of exercises that will allow your hamstring tissues to be pulled and compressed in order to prevent reoccurrence of the injury. Strengthening programs on the other hand are done in order to wake up the muscles from their hibernation. Immobilization weakens the muscle tissues making them lose their strength.

– Surgery – this type of treatment is used for people who are looking for faster results. Surgery is also utilized on serious injuries where natural treatment may take quite a long period of time to fully heal and recover.
