Essential Questions for the First Time Caravan Buyer
If you’re reading this, chances are that you have given some thought to the idea of purchasing a motorhome and you’re now ready to take the first step towards owning one. Whether you would like to get a caravan to escape the hustle of city life on weekends, or see it as a recreational activity for you and your family, or simply for the fun of it, it is important to ask certain questions beforehand in preparation for your purchase, especially if it is your first time doing so! Like buying a car or a house, this is a major decision which could potentially change your life so it’s best to do as much research as you can before making this exciting purchase.
– How much weight can your car tow?
Do remember to check your vehicle’s tow weight allowance. A small car that is unable to manage a heavy load would be dangerous on the roads.
– What is your budget?
You should first determine the amount of money that you are willing to fork out for the caravan, so that you will not be distracted by aggressive salespeople who are likely to push you into buying something above your budget, or talk you into adding extra accessories you don’t need. If that happens your vacation will be dampened by the strain on your wallet!
– Brand new or used?
If you do not have enough to finance a brand new caravan, you can try looking at second-hand ones. There are plenty of used motorhomes on the market but do remember to check its condition thoroughly before buying it. Do not take the seller’s word at face value! Since this is your first time buying a caravan, you should bring along an expert or someone with the necessary knowledge to help you assess the condition of the caravan. Some used motorhomes already come equipped with everything you need, especially if the previous owners are seasoned caravanners, which will take a load off your back!
– What is your purpose in getting a caravan?
Will you be using it for short weekend getaways, long holiday trips, or as a mobile home? Will you be the only one using it, or is the caravan for the family? This will determine the size, layout and facilities you should look at. If you’re planning to live in it with other people, you will definitely need a decent sized one with enough bunks and space for everyone.
– Facilities required?
Now that you have a clear idea of what your motorhome will be used for, you have to think of the facilities you need- toilet, shower, kitchen, air-conditioning, entertainment and size of storage space. If you are staying at caravan parks most of the time, there is no need for an attached bath and toilet. Same goes for the kitchen, as you can easily cook outside on an open fire once you’re parked securely somewhere. Next, are you a creature of comfort? If so, you might want to consider getting one with air-conditioning and/or entertainment such as televisions and sound systems.
