What is an Ankle Sprain

Athletes are among the group of people who are prone to all sorts of injuries due to their daily activities. Among the most common type of injury that they get during practice or in the game is an ankle sprain. The signs and symptoms of an ankle sprain are pain at the outside area of the ankle, swelling and bruising, difficulty in turning or twisting the ankle, and stiffness on the joints of the lower limbs. Like many of the injuries, an ankle sprain is divided into three grades where the doctor would identify the condition of the foot. Basically, lower grade also has lesser pain and discomfort as compared to the higher ones. In addition, it is much easier to recover from a grade 1 ankle sprain as compared to a grade 2 or 3.

When it comes to treating an ankle sprain, there are several known treatments that can be successfully used in getting back the lower limb to function normally. RICE or rest, ice, compression, and elevation are methods which are commonly used to bring back the structural integrity and function of the ankle. Sports massage can also be a good medical care as it works through the deep muscle tissues of the human body. In addition, it is a type of natural therapy that is recommended by many doctors all over the world basically because of its efficacy. Rehabilitation programs should be included as a part of your recovery process in order to prevent future reoccurrence of the injury. In severe cases, you can expect surgery to be done by the doctor. However, if you are undergoing a minor injury, then there would be no need for such an operation which can be quite expensive and complicated. Surgical fixation is usually done on cases where nerves, blood vessels and other important part of the human body are torn or damaged.
