Novelty Restaurants We Want in the Mainstream
There is across the globe a fine array of wondrous culinary avant-garde eating establishments, which is all good – if you\’re an international jetsetter. For the more regular bod though, such treats are of limited availability. Now while it might hamper their novelty factor, we\’re willing to take that chance because we want to try their delights without having to fork (ahem) out for a plane ticket!
Modern Toilet, Taiwan
Stylish and toilet themed aren\’t exactly immediately obvious bedfellows, or dining mates. Modern Toilet has debunked this, or at least ignored it. Patrons plant there rears on super-styled toilets with fancy lids, each with their own unique design. Tables are formed from other bathroom features, mostly sinks and baths. The food is all presented in mini versions of the classic toilet bowl and you get to sup your chosen beverage from a urinal. A urinal you are allowed to take home as a souvenir.
Bahenec Wellness Hotel, Czech Republic
More Bar than restaurant, but an idea that must roll out globally. The idea is in its most simple form Bier Bottich Bad or in English, beer tub bath. Yup, you bath in booze, like Cleopatra, but with a higher alcohol by volume level. There is a little more to it than just washing down in beer though. You\’ll be treated to two hours of relaxation that begins with a Finnish sauna followed by the bath, during which you\’ll of course drink a fair amount of the stuff too and following that you get to sleep it off on a bed of oat straw. Lush.
Vampire Cafe, Japan
Don\’t say we never think of the Twilight fans. This restaurant is the perfect setting for a date between couples inspired by the eternal bond shared by Bella and Edward. It\’s built on the mould of vampire gentry think rich velvets and heavy drapes, chandeliers and waxy candelabras. Wannabe blood suckers will be treated to blood from a well stocked reserve of cadavers, the odd dismembered limb of which might have been left in the main part of the restaurant.
Ithaa, Maldives
The name doesn\’t really give much away other than it\’s likely you\’ll be having a swell time living it up in the Maldives. The restaurant is very special though. Ithaa, which translates as Mother Of Pearl in Dhivehi, is underwater. The restaurant has an acrylic roof that allows diners to effectively sit on the bottom of the Indian Ocean surrounded by its rich marine life and crystal clear waters. Obviously taking a similar approach in other waters might not be so spectacular due to visibility issues. Nobody wants to eat supper surround by water that resembles soiled bathwater. Nevertheless if a decent spot can be found it should be given a go. Besides Ithaa was built in 2004 and only has a life span of 20 years. We need a submerged dining experience to take up its mantle.
