What is a Rotator Cuff Injury?
If you are having a hard time with your shoulder joints, perhaps you should get it assessed and diagnosed by your doctor to make sure that you are in a good condition and at the same time can prevent future problems. Problems on the shoulder are caused by many different types of injuries. Among these is a rotator cuff injury which is caused by excessive and strenuous movement of the rotator muscles especially on athletes who are into competitive activities.
Basically, the rotator cuff is a group of muscles that acts as support to the Glenohumeral (shoulder) joint to keep it stable and in place during movement. These four muscles are known as Supraspinatus, Subscapularis, Infraspinatus, and Teres Minor which are responsible for keeping control of the joint during its rotation process. When in good condition, these four helps a lot in keeping the arms and joints in place even through strenuous activities.
Excessive movement and over-use of this muscle group contributes to a rotator cuff injury. Sports such as tennis, bowling, baseball, kayaking, swimming, and other type of sports that involves continuous movement of the arm and rotation of the Glenohumeral joint are common causes of the injury.
Severe pain, discomfort, inflammation, tenderness, and difficulty in movement are among the common signs and symptoms that you have a rotator cuff injury. There are two degrees of tear in a rotator cuff injury which would grade the severity of the injury. Both acute and chronic tear are regarded to be given proper and immediate medical attention in order to achieve an effective and successful treatment. Do not wait for the problem to become serious before you act on it as this can cause bigger problems in the long run.
Your doctor can always prescribe many different treatments that will fit your budget and preference. You can choose from natural methods to the more sophisticated and fast-acting surgeries although the latter option would suggest a higher price as compared to the previous. Sports massage is a good type of natural therapy that uses massage strokes and techniques that are popular as alternative to various surgeries for almost all types of sports-related injuries. It includes relaxing and soothing methods that will surely help the patient recover physically, mentally, and emotionally. Physical therapist can also help you regain your condition especially the function of the rotator cuffs. Most of the athletes who are competing on prestigious leagues usually take the surgery route as this is known to provide faster results in terms of healing and recovery.
Aside from the above-mentioned treatments, the patient should also consider doing the RICE program which includes rest, immobilization, cold compress, and exercise to boost their healing and recovery process. This program should be done right at the start of the injury except for the exercise which is usually done when there is no sign of pain. It is highly suggested that you consult your doctor or physician first before planning on having any type of treatment as this will save you from further injuries.
