What is Sever’s Disease?
A painful feeling at the back of the heel which is usually a common injury among children between 8 to 15 years of age is known as sever’s disease. The injury is often associated with the fast growth of children in these ages which results to the rapid growth of bones where the muscles and tendons find it hard to extend due to the tightness. It is also known as the second most common type of injury among children all over the world.
The injury’s signs and symptoms are quite similar to almost all types of injury in that pain and discomfort settles at the specific, damaged area of the human body. Although a lump at the back of the heel(s) may not be present at all times, some cases involve this type of irregularity in this area of the lower limb. Walking and running can be quite difficult and painful especially on serious cases. Most likely you will also feel tenderness at the back of the heels as you try to press or squeeze in that area. Do not press with pressure though as this can be painful and uncomfortable to the young patient.
The treatment methods involved in treating a sever’s disease are quite basic and easy to follow even by children under the age of 15. The first and most important thing for the kids to do is to relax and let the affected part of the body to rest within the given period of time. Immobilizing the damaged part of the body helps it to rejuvenate its injuries although the end result would also lead to weaker muscles. This can be solved later on though using stretching exercises included in the rehabilitation program. Use cold packs on the area where the problem is repeatedly throughout the day to help control the pain and swelling. Do not apply the ice directly on the skin of the child to avoid ice burns which can cause discoloration on the skin. It helps a lot to ask your child regarding his or her condition in order to monitor the progress of the therapy. Splints can also be used depending on the preference and prescription of the medical professional. Night splints are very important to let the children sleep well at night as most injuries tend to worsen their pain and discomfort level during bed time. Plastering or applying tape on the affected ankle will act as a support to the injury. Insoles are also great for cushioning the lower limb which helps a lot in keeping the weight and pressure under control. Ask your doctor for medications that are good in keeping inflammation and pain at bay. Never try stuffs that are not approved by a medical professional as this can worsen the situation.
In case your doctor may approve of a sports massage, you can always look for a good massage therapist who can help your child recover from the injury. Massage does not only help a person recover from the specific problem but can also provide many benefits and advantages to the various systems of the human body.
