A Review on Good and Bad Factors of Invisalign
Invisalign refers to removable and clear teeth aligners, used by Dentists and Orthodontists as an alternative to the conventional dental braces. Since it is clear plastic, Invisalign is not noticeable in the oral cavity. Align Technology, a company based in Santa Clara, California, introduced the Invisalign technology. It is a revolutionary discovery in the dentistry field and often recommended as a great option for people, who do not want metal braces of traditional orthodontic treatment.
Invisalign is a treatment option for malocclusion or misaligned teeth. It includes placement of brackets and wires on the surface of the teeth. The wires are tightened by applying force on the teeth. This produces progress to the desired position of the teeth. The average duration of the treatment is about a year depending on the complexity and the minimum duration of the treatment is two weeks.
The Major benefit of Invisalign is the visual factor, since it is barely noticeable. It is also removable therefore, the person’s dental health is not compromised and he can always floss and brush his teeth by removing the aligners. Apart from being invisible and removable, the aligners are more comfortable to wear than metal braces. Invisalign is non-fixed thing; hence a person need not limit himself to non-sticky diet.
Invisalign has bad factors as well, like dilemmas associated with damage to the supporting bone, recession of the gums, and maintenance of oral hygiene. Other factors include root resorption (shortening of the roots) and build up of plaque & calculus around the brackets, that may lead to tooth decay and demineralization.
One major con of Invisalign is the difficulty to maintain oral hygiene. This is because of the presence of brackets and wires on the teeth that are not removable. If a person with aligners does not know how to maintain his or her oral hygiene, they will suffer from tooth decay along with the accumulation of calculus and plaques.
Not all people qualify for Invisalign treatment. Only those people, with mild crowding or minimal amount of malocclusion are suitable for Invisalign. The treatment is not done in cases with severe crossbite or overbite. In addition, tooth rotation cannot be treated by the aligners, especially when it comes to premolars and molars. The treatment is not suggested in people with teeth grinding habit, as this may permanently damage the aligners.
Some people tend to abuse the benefit of Invisalign aligners as being removable; those wearing must understand that there is a minimum duration of wearing it, to get desired results. The success rate of the Invisalign treatment seriously depends on the patient and his/her motivation level. If the patient is careless and negligent, the desired results may not be achieved. In addition, patients who do not wear their aligners regularly will have a problem on the next set of aligners to be used, as it may not fit properly. Because of this, re-fabrication of the aligners might be needed, thus adding extra cost to the treatment.
Cost of Invisalign is another discouraging factor for most people, as this treatment is expensive compared to the regular metal braces. Since the aligners are clear plastic, regular replacement is needed for every session and there might be extra dental laboratories that should be done as well, therefore, the price can go higher. Only experienced orthodontic surgeons provide Invisalign as a treatment option.
