Why Facebook Can Be a Threat to Your Privacy
In recent times Facebook has suffered a bit of a backlash. People are concerned about their privacy and what is happening to their personal details. In many ways Facebook is like an online diary and people don’t want people going in to look at it who they wouldn’t want to nor would they want their details to be used so they can be contacted by third-parties.
For Facebook this is a very delicate issue. Their site is valued at billions but that is only as people keep coming to their site. The millions of people collectively amount to a database of information that is literally priceless. Facebook would love to be able to turn this information into some sort of revenue stream but they are very limited with what they can do with the information.
As a result of the backlash, around 30,000 people are alleged to have closed their accounts and many more could follow. So it is all up in the air what is going to happen next. For the time being you can still play your scrabble, poker and bingo games. More and more things are being added all the time so if you like to use the site to play bingo or Farmville you don’t have to worry – those things aren’t going anywhere.
Any user who has privacy concerns can help themselves. They can do this by tightening up the privacy settings on their account. You can decide who has access to what aspects of your account. You can prevent them from seeing your photos or even seeing your account when they search. Also you can block them.
Additionally if you get contacted by people whom you don’t know you should keep them at arm’s length. You don’t know who they are and they literally could be anyone. This is part of the times in which we live. The technology has both advantages and disadvantages.
For the most part something like Facebook is safe and you don’t have things to worry about but you need to have common sense. Think about it this way – it’s like if you lived in a house. Yes you could get broken into at any time but would you leave the doors and windows open while you weren’t home? Most likely not – you would take precautions. So too should you take some here.
Facebook has its issues to work out and try to deal with. As a company and brand they want to keep moving forward and be the latest and best in social media and networking. The reality is that in the beginning something is new and exciting but the moment it becomes big, a bit of a backlash can develop. No longer is Facebook the quaint cute site it once was.
In internet terms it is like King Kong. It is one of the biggest sites out there. Because of this, people are less inclined to cut them the slack they did in the early days. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out.
