Overcoming the Fitness Caste System
Do genetics play a role in how big you get? How strong you become? Or how fast you can build lean muscle ? Undoubtedly. There are people who probably come out the womb ripped . There are those who have naturally broad shoulders and frames that muscle seems to cling to like a magnet . There are professional bodybuilders who were already strong when they were teenagers and become fitness gods when they get older!
You may know somebody with the super metabolic rate. You know, that person who can eat doughnuts, drink milk shakes, and still lose weight. These people don\’t have even think concern themselves with muscle building diet plans, the muscle growth happens regardless. Aarrggh! I hate…er…envy those people . Everyone was dealt a different set of genetic cards , but how you play it determines your overall fitness level .
Getting the body you want can sometimes be frustrating, so much so in fact that people blame their genetics and resign themselves to a life of mediocre fitness. I think genetics has been the fitness scapegoat for far too long. When people don\’t see the results they want, they often point a finger at their gene pools…often erroneously so . Save medical, genetic disorders…true genetic disorders, I think poor genetics becomes a hurdle that keeps them from achieving their trainin goals. Sure, your genetics could possibly make things more challenging, but there are things you can do work around, or even bypass in some cases, your \”genetic failings\”.
Have you ever seen pictures of Lou Ferrigno before he became a bodybuilder? Or have you seen pictures of Jean Claude Van Damme before he became a movie star? These guys were both pretty lanky. No one could have guessed what kind of bodies these men would end up with. Lou Ferrigno went on to become the Hulk…literally and Van Damme had one of the most desirable bodies in Hollywood during his prime. I think these are two great case studies where hard work, dietary discipline, effective workout routines to build muscle, and the right mindset allowed two people to triumph over the very threads of nature.
Maybe you\’re thinking \”Well, that\’s great for them, but what about me?\” They every bit as human as you are. The biggest thing was their mindsets . They believed in themselves and in their goals so strongly, that even their genetics had to give in.
How exactly can you transcend your fitness caste to reach fitness nirvana? Here are four things that I did:
1. SOMETHING HAS TO DRIVE YOU OVER THE EDGE
For me, I was very thin, very lanky, and went through a gynecomastia (male breasts) phase in my teenage years that made me EXTREMELY self-conscious. I got tired of being teased, laughed at, and pinched by the boys & girls at school. I didn\’t want to be the thin boy with petite man boobs anymore. I couldn\’t afford to have surgery (nor would my parents let me), nor could I control what was happening to my body so I trained my ass off one summer. I put on nearly ten pounds of solid of muscle that summer . That was my first, real \”spur me into action\”moment. This moment allowed me to change my \”caste\” .
2. IF YOU THINK YOU CAN, YOU\’RE RIGHT
If you don\’t like the way your body is, you have to find a way to transform that frustration, anger, and restlesleness into a positive, usable form, one that always has you moving forward. Know that you get the body you want, NEVER lose sight of that, and you WILL do it!
3. DON\’T LIE TO YOURSELF
If you know you have a propensity for love handles, a spare tire, and belly fat, adjust your diet accordingly . The Snickers, beer, and bananas diet probably isn\’t going to work for you. Keep your protein intake high , the carbs you eat meaningful, and your fats and sugars down.
4. TRAIN, TRAIN, and TRAIN SOME MORE!
If you don\’t train and do so effectively, odds are it will be MUCH harder to change your body. Experiment for as long as you need to in order to get the results you truly desire. For example, If you were born into a family of chicken legs, like me, if you were born a Chickotaur (person with a human body and chicken legs…just made that up) , your thighs and calves may not grow the way you want them to. You could just sigh and give up saying \”Ahh, my calves are never going to grow.\” Or you could dig in. Test every exercise you can get your hands on , test every angle of that calf raise, and test as much weight as your calves can safely bear. I have do whatever it takes to get my calves growing. In the end, you don\’t have to be stuck where you are. You can build your body.
There are no Couch Potato Pariahs, Superset Sudras, Kettle Bell Kshatriyas, or Bodybuilding Brahmins DON\’T FALL VICTIM TO THE EXCUSE OF POOR GENETICS!! You CAN control your fitness. What\’s the best way to build muscle when your genetics are working against you? Simply get out there and give it your all.
