5 Situations For Performing First Aid on Infants

One of the most important duties that parents have is to protect their children from all unexpected dangers. It is inevitable that infants will face some illness or injury at some point of time and the parents should be prepared for it. This can be achieved only when the parents are confident of handling the medical situation.

First aid training can be an ideal way to deal with these problems easily. As infants are not capable of communicating the pain or injury that they have except for crying, it is essential that proper infant first aid training is obtained. At the first instance of any signs of injury or difficulty that the baby has try to check for any bleeding, bruises or bumps. Remember that you can only help in controlling the bleeding or other signs that the baby has. The baby has to be rushed for medical help without fail as soon as possible.

There are many health issues that babies face such as these below:

– Accidental Fall- When a baby has a fall accidentally and you are able to see bleeding or bumps then give cold compression to the baby immediately until bleeding stops. You need to perform a CPR when the baby has fallen into water and it has filled in his lungs. Check if there are any changes in the behavior of the baby and rush to the emergency medical unit for further assistance.

– Choking- Many infants have the nasty habit of putting most of things that they see especially when they are learning to identify things and crawling. The baby may choke and not be able to breathe when it has swallowed hard things such as coins or erasers etc. The first thing you need to do is call for emergency medical help and then start to provide first aid to the baby

– Heart Beat and Breathing-. When the baby has lost consciousness and there is no breathing and pulse you should immediately give mouth to mouth breathing and chest compressions. Ensure that you use half the pressure that is normally applied to an adult as the baby has tender organs and could be fatal for the baby.

– Food allergy – A baby may react to foods that are introduced for the first time. When the baby has spasms or wheezing due the food that you have given make sure to reach out to medical unit as soon as possible. Try to keep the baby calm and give first aid treatment when the reaction is mild. You can even try to give a small dose of anti-allergy medication and wait for improvement in the condition of the baby, else reach out to emergency unit immediately.

– Fever – It is normal for infants to have fever at frequent intervals. But high fever in infants can prove to be fatal as their brain is said to get affected when left unattended. So make sure that the temperature of the baby does not go above 103 degrees F. Apart from giving fever medicine you also need to do cold sponging on the forehead along with hands and feet of the baby. When the fever does not come down within an hour or the baby has short breathing you need to rush to the emergency medical unit immediately for further treatment.

Thus first aid training for an infant is quite different and more specialized than that of an adult.
