Are Silicone Breast Implants Safe Or Not?
In the light of the new controversy that has been tainting breast implants today, a lot of women have been questioning their safety. Even though it has been around for a while now, there are still a lot of apprehensions about it. And to prove these fears, there are a lot of unfortunate cases that have been reported.
Back in 1992 silicone breast implants were removed from the market due to problems of ruptures and leakage which has been attributed to cancer. But they have returned back in 2006 with claims that it is made out of safer materials. After evaluation and studies, these new set of implants gained approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The FDA reached their decision through the studies that have been made by the giant companies, Allergan Inc. and Johnson & Johnson’s Mentor Worldwide. Both companies have enrolled 40,000 and 39,300 women respectively. But they encountered the challenge of gaining good follow up rates, which is essential in coming up with solid evidence since they have lost contact with a large part of their study participants. Allergan had a total of 21%, while Johnson & Johnson gained 60.5%.
During the 14 year hiatus of silicone breast implants in the market, and the extensive study that it had to go through, it was found out that there really wasn’t any connection between implants and certain diseases, particularly cancer. But despite their approved safety, the FDA still advised the two companies to conduct studies for the next ten years to observe the long term effects.
Despite the findings given by these studies, many still call into question the safety information that it provides. Diana Zuckerman of the National Research Center even stated that the material didn’t provide the information it is expected to give. But FDA answered this concern by stating that they will work with other experts outside the agency to further improve the outcome of the studies.
The FDA also admitted that more studies are needed in order to give women more extensive information regarding the benefits and safety of breast implants.
Mentor suggested through a letter released by the FDA to doctors to encourage their patients to come for follow ups. This is also a way of encouraging women who had breast implants to participate in the studies since they cannot demand that they come for annual check-up since this is not the usual standard of care.
But with the latest controversy that has been surrounding the French manufactured PIP breast implants, a lot of women are expressing concerns. The main issue about those particular implants is that it has a high rupture rate and it was made out of industrial grade materials.
With that being said, it is also the responsibility of these women to themselves that they ask their doctor about all the necessary information needed. From the process, techniques, doctor’s experience, and materials being used.
The FDA does state that generally silicone implants are safe, but they are not free from possible complications. Dr. Jeffrey Shuren of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health even strongly suggests that women who have breast implants should have follow up visits so that the doctor can closely monitor the condition of the implants. During these visits an MRI scan can be done to check for leaks, ruptures and other problems. Since implants don’t always show immediate changes on the outside when it leaks, this check-up will prevent late detection.
